What are your accommodation recommendations when coming to Mayo?

I totally agree. And please Note we just stayed at Kahler Grand and could not believe the "Tiny student room with broken TV, 1 light bulb with town lamp shad, no wash clothes, closet bigger than the shower & noisy toilet, Broken fridge stacked on dresser blocking Broken TV!!!Front desk evening check in girl looked down on us and said,Oh you booked on hotwire!" Rude! So no more Kahler Grand for us!

You have t book a standard room not a student room . I have never seen those rooms and we have been going for 17 years to the Kahler Grand . Sorry you had a bad experience

Im sorry u had a bad experience with them. I stayed there probably 20x and never had a bad experience. They always went above and beyond but like someone else said book threw the hotel. I always did it that way so they knew i was a patient etc.

We are coming from Michigan on Sunday and on a very small budget. Where is the best place to stay that has a shuttle with wheelchair access?

We book Kahler Inn and Suites on Hotmail.com for $66.00-$76.00 per night. connects withtunnel system to Mayo Clinic.WCHR are everywhere for free.Free Breakfast. Bigger Rooms than the Kahler. Just be sure to book downtown and no where else. look for the 80% recommendation and sometimes E Rochesterlocation

I see that @llwortman has already shared some excellent information from her experience.
My husband and I have stayed at several nearby lodgings that we could walk in the 'subway ' system, and not be bothered by the weather. They are all wheelchair friendly. Parking at the motel could be something to consider. Here is a link that my husband found helpful. http://www.rochestercvb.org/ Our preference is to be connected to Mayo. If you are driving and need to park, be sure to check out whether there is a fee.

We have also stayed at short distance and relied on the shuttle service. If you choose to stay away from the clinic, most motels have shuttles that take you directly to the main entry, and pick you there. It has a roof, so no need to worry about the rain or snow! Shuttles are wheelchair accessible, and there are also wheelchairs at the entry if you prefer to do that. Drivers are all helpful to anyone needing assistance. If this is your choice - Use the shuttle. You cannot beat the door to door service!

Thank you for your response. We have called around unfortunately the shuttles can not lift a wheelchair and he is unable to climb stairs due to a broken hip/femur bone in July. They are also living on ssi so income is very tight at the moment. Mayo is our last hope the Drs here in the upper peninsula of Michigan can not handle his condition.

@aclark81, I think you should contact the Concierge Service that I share in my previous post. You do not have to do this alone. Mayo is the last hope for many patients. Give them a call.
