I had an appointment with Dr. Shah in Endocrinology....I really liked him. He is very knowledgeable as well as practical. He is helping me to find less costly medications than the two I am currently on...neither is covered by insurance. I have stayed at the Grand Kahler. You take the elevator to the basement ( aka the " Subway") and the Mayo Building is a short walk away. There are wheel-chairs should you need them. The Grand Kahler has a nice honey restaurant called the Grand Grille....best turkey sandwich EVER! There is also a patient cafeteria on the way to the Mayo Building. Let me know if you have any questions I can answer. Good luck to you!
When u find a hotel ur interested in my advise is to check and make sure they offer the shuttle service its wonderful also i can remember the motel we stayed at but they gave us a discount because my dad had a cdl (truckers discount) it made the room very cheap. I cant express how glad i went to mayo clinic they made my life manageable with all the craziness going on. I also was shown what quality looks like when it comes to medical services.
There is a Howard Johnson right down the street from Mayo and on Beach Blvd there is a Holiday Inn Express both dame price and nice hotels!
Hi @bpenner ! I see Dr. Peter Tebben and Dr. Caroline Davidge-Pitts in Endocrinology. Both awesome doctors!
There are two main Mayo high-rises in Rochester for out-patient visits. These are the Gonda and Mayo buildings, and they are hooked together seamlessly. You will be going to the 15th floor of the Mayo building, but if you accidentally go to the 15th floor of the Gonda building, you can just walk straight to the Mayo building. (I actually suggest going to the 15th floor of the Gonda building at some point because the side of the building is windows and you will see quite a view.)
The itinerary they mail to you will give you additional info. In the subway of the Gonda building, there is also an information desk near the Patient/Visitor Cafeteria and they can direct you to the correct elevators.
If you are having an endocrine appointment, you will most likely be doing labs after your appointment. The lab is located down a long hallway in the subway level of the Mayo building, but is still super-easy to get to and has some interesting stuff on the walls to look at.
I usually stay at the Kahler Grand Hotel. It's right across the dead-end street from Mayo's main, street-level entrance (the one you see on brochures), which enters into the 1st floor level of the Gonda building. If I go there in the wintertime, I take the Kahler Grand elevators to the subway level so I don't have to deal with the weather, and I also don't have to wear a coat.
The closest hotels are the Kahler Grand and the Marriot. As with any city with an "attraction," the hotels further away will be less expensive and will have shuttles, but I like staying there because I can easily go back to my room between appointments. Also, there's a lot of stuff close-by within walking distance, including restaurants, shops, and a small mall. The Kahler Grand also has a couple of restaurants, a small store, and a Starbucks, some stores in the subway level, and a parking garage that you can self-park in or valet, and they also have regular shuttles all day to the Apache Mall and Walmart.
Additionally, there are a ton of subway-level restaurants and shops opening during Mayo's business hours... Subway, Quiznos, Freshens, Dairy Queen/Orange Julius, a pharmacy with some small groceries, etc.
For travel, I have both rented a car and also used the Yellow Cab company. Yellow Cab has a smartphone app that enables me to order my cab service for my arrival and departure dates/times while I'm still home in New York before I've even left for Minnesota.
Priceline offers rooms at Marriott Stay Bridge Suites $64.00-$90.00 per night, right across the street (free parking).
Hotwire offers (free parking) $61.00-$71.00 per night at the Kahler Inn and Suites. Has underground tunnels to Mayo Clinic. We really like Hotwire.

Both Priceline & Hotwire charge a small service fee, but hotel rooms are 'usually' non refundable (refunds depend on hotel but must go thru booking co fir refund)
Holiday inn web site room charge about $89-$98 if you book online.
Holiday inn on Broadway (has skyway to Mayo Clinic)

When you book be sure to look at maps or you could have a bit of a ride. Many hotels have free van services.

You can give me a call if you want more info. We are back at mayo about every 6 weeks!

Mayo is worth the drive, flights and hotel because they are the best.
Could not agree with you more about Mayo.
I've also used Expedia.com, but you have to be careful because changing dates for flights and hotel can cause you to lose any refunds.
The best hotel prices I ever got were through American Airlines. After I booked my most recent flights, the web site asked if I wanted to book my room using them. We got the nicest room we'd ever had at the Kahler Grand at the lowest prices we'd ever paid.
If you go to hotel web sites and order directly, many also have specials for AAA, AARP, etc.
