I think it has been all the ultra-processing in the foods we eat all to save $$. The way we process wheat is banned in so many other countries, and the pesticides! In other countries, the ingredient list on a loaf of bread is 6 or less also depending on the bread. Here there are over 20 ingredients, in a loaf. Over 70% of the foods sold at grocery stores are ultra-processed. I did not drink much, maybe 1 glass a week. Now maybe one glass a month.

I believe there’s plenty of scientific evidence now that diet, lifestyle, and the environment significantly influence our risk of developing breast cancer. These factors damage our immune system, and if it’s not functioning properly, cancer cells can take over because we all have them. I have now completely changed my life. I quit all processed foods, stopped drinking alcohol, adopted a whole foods organic diet, discarded all my makeup and house cleaning products, and bought new organic items. I tossed out all my condiments and repurchased organic ones. Now I walk 5 miles a day and do strength training. Staying healthy is now my way of life. I'm just a little sad I came to this awareness so late in life (I’m 73), but my kids are benefiting, and that makes me happy.

In my case, I have lived for decades in sun-deprived north latitude and was never told by family doctor to take Vit D supplements, so I am sure that didn't help. There is no BC in my family history, I never took the pill, no hormone treatments, no smoking, rarely a glass of wine, vegetarian diet, reasonable exercise, not overweight...one possible additional factor, had a cyst removed from the same breast when I was a teenager long before the cancer, and much later, some years before the cancer, had a negative tumor biopsy in same breast...I wonder if those interventions had any impact.

I too wondered what caused my TNBC at age 67. I had enjoyed perfect health up until then. I did drink plenty of wine, slept with a silicone patch between my breasts to prevent wrinkles, took the heavy duty birth control pills from the 70’s for ten years, and more. When I asked my doctors, they said you’ll never know (as I have no genetic factors)-it’s just bad luck.

I have posted this graphic before, but will again as it illustrates how complicated the question is.

Thank you for the chart. BC is indeed complicated. I had 14 years ERT ( menopause at 36), BC DX at 52( EP+ HER 2- & 4 + nodes). Plus I had definitely tried to drink myself through some horrendous personal problems--stress. Who knows??? At 76 with a new breast cancer, other side, I had 24 clear years and I am thankful every day.

@diannetaggart After the first 2003 BC ( lumpectomy, nodes removed, chemo, radiation, Aromasin 5 years) I pretty much cleaned up my act-- no alcohol, ate healthy- nothing weird, exercised....BUT interestingly the year before my new BC ( other boob) I had a lot of stress- marriage problems. The whole " mega-stress" was true for me before the 2003 dx. Who knows, really.

Alcohol. Period.

@maryliz22503 There are people who never drank a drop of alcohol and still got it. But, too much of anything is never good.

@kategiddyup

I believe major stress plays a huge part; my husband was difficult and had health issues for several years prior. it was during my radiation we found he had a brain mass.
