Pain after robotic assisted lobectomy: How long does it last?
I had a robotic assisted lobectomy about 5 weeks ago and still experiencing pain. Seems like there has been very little improvement in past couple of weeks although incisions look great. The pain is mostly when I am moving and at night when trying to get comfortable in bed. Just wondering how long others had pain after this type of surgery? I feel bad even asking this as so many people have went through so much more in their cancer journey than I have. I know I should feel fortunate.

@elletee123 , Your pain sounds miserable. Chronic pain has to be so difficult to deal with. Did you continue with the gabapentin? Some people here have had some relief with it. It sounds like you've pulled in the experts, in your pain management doctor. Are you getting any relief?
@elletee123 I had many of the same problems as you, my surgery has been 1 year ago< and now my nerve pain is worse. I have been on & off taking Gabapentin. I struggle taking it because of the side affects. My pain was not controlled well enough in the first 3 to 5 months. I wish I would have been able to do Physical therapy as I wondering if that would have helped us out more. Your not alone in this. I'm hoping to go off Gabapentin soon. Just deal with the pain?? Not sure at this point what the answer will be. Helps to hear others are out there & we are not alone. I guess I am happy to be cancer free. Although I felt much much better before I had this procedure done. (I also had a terrible cough at first, which was so painful) Cough is much better now. Lungs Only hurts at times when tired & breath deeply or yawn. The nerve pain is much worse.

3 ReactionsHi everyone . My husband had a lobectomy the Dr said he took 40% of his lower lobe in his right lung. He originally was diagnosed with stage 1 carcinoma all lymph nodes were negative. However the tumor was bit larger 4.1 cm. The surgeon was a Robotic specialist.
That was 4 weeks ago and the nerve pain is extreme. The Nurse practitioner has changed his meds several times. Narcotics do not agree with him. He’s now on 900mg Gapentin 3x a day along with a muscle relaxer. His pain level after 3 days is about 7 from an eight. Most of the pain is on his right side where the drain tube was located. He describes it as burning, tingling and sharp. Besides drugs we've tried a heating pad. They talked to us about pain management. Has anybody tried that?
Well we wish you all the best and
A speedy recovery.
If you have any pain suggestions please let us know. Tx

1 ReactionMy Thoracic surgeon told me the robotic instruments they insert between the ribs cause nerve damage (tingling, burning, sharp pain), and nerves are very slow to heal.
In the hospital after my two robotic lung surgeries, I only took Tramadol and Tylenol for the first 1-2 days after surgery. All other codeine based narcotics make me very nauseated. Has your husband tried Tramadol?
Ask your doctor if it is ok to try 600 mg of Alpha Lipoic Acid, which is a supplement that my Neurologist suggested I try for my painful peripheral neuropathy in my feet. The neurologist said it was the only supplement that could help nerves heal. It worked for me, but it took time. All the nerve pain in my feet went away. He also recommended exercise.
I posted earlier about seeing a physical therapist for post-surgery exercises. The early exercises involved sitting in a chair and holding onto a cane with both hands to guide gentle movements. She progressed through the exercises over the next several weeks. She told me it was essential to keep moving as the body heals. The therapist also showed me how to perform a gentle scar massage around the incision sites to prevent scar tissue from attaching to the surrounding bony structures and muscles, which could cause future pain after the incisions heal. I saw her starting two days after surgery and continued seeing her weekly for 4 weeks.
My incisions healed and are smooth and flat. I have a full range of motion and no pain. Be patient it takes time. I hope your husband feels better soon as he heals.

2 Reactions@canarsiegirl9 I am three weeks today from lower right lobe lobectomy and am also allergic to narcotics (itching). I have been relatively pain free and then for the past three days - wow. In my right side rib cage. And gosh....let's add a cough in there. I feel for your husband and I do not know how long this lasts!

2 ReactionsI tried a spinal intercostal block but didn’t think it helped much. I also think the lidocaine patches work but I must be allergic to them because I get itchy rash. I do think a heating pad helped me at night. I’m taking 300 mg of gabapentin 3 times a day. That helps me. It has been 11 weeks for me since my surgery and they say it’s all nerve pain. I do feel better at 11 weeks vs 8. Hoping time heals all pain!! 🙏🏻

1 Reaction@rcerwin3 Thank you. Yes he also has a cough. It’s letting up a lot after a month and a week after surgery. They increased Gabapentin to 300mg3x a day. Today was the first day he’s had some significant relief.
Hope you feeling better soon.
@janet23
Thank you great information. He was never offered a therapist or Tramadol. Never heard about scar massage. They offered him Pain management which we are going to tomorrow.
Let you know if it’s of any help.
So happy you have no pain. Stay well.

3 Reactions@rcerwin3 - I feel for your wife. My husband was killed in a car accident 5 years ago (yesterday) so my chihuahua is the only one I am bugging. And I bet he hates it!

After my first robotic surgery, I was taking Tramadol every 6 hours and Tylenol in between if I still had pain. As the pain lessened, I just took Tylenol.
By the second week, I stopped all pain medication and stayed busy with projects inside and outside. I returned to walking my usual routine of 5 miles a day and continued to do the exercises Physical Therapy gave me.
Keep us posted on how your husband is doing.
