I’m suspicious of information these days seems to be all over the place…maybe due to internet “evangelism” I don’t know but some specialists say at the end of the six months of prolia when there are a few weeks before next injection or even sooner ( get some advice from someone who specializes in ONJ) Tymlos or Forteo. It said that’s what they use to try to fix ONJ.

1 ReactionHave you discussed this concern with your dentist, or an oral surgeon? Many are familiar with this issue and can guide you.
Whatever you do, if you decide to stop Prolia, have a plan to relay to another bone med right away. Don’t delay your injection without a plan.
Rebound fractures are a real risk once you get 6 months past your last injection.
Good luck,

It’s almost as if once they get you “hooked” they’ve got you for life? There has to be something about that being wrong?

It certainly does seem that way.
I’ve had a long difficult journey with bone meds and won’t take them again.
I told my endocrinologist that bone meds are a band aid, if you stop the meds the band aid gets ripped off and you end up back where you started, or worse.
Everyone’s journey is different, I am a firm believer in educating ourselves so that we can make decisions based on that knowledge. I’ll never again be persuaded to do anything health related unless I’ve done the homework first.
Lesson learned.

2 ReactionsI have hsd my hard earned trust destroyed this way. I am a fairly intelligent person but not a medical professional. I consider us a team. However, it seems whst I was told was wrong. The follow up I did! I was the person in rexvruciating pain and the team did not stay current on severe side effects nor recent studies. Why should I trust? What can we do to make such significant decisions? I, as you, have been so badly damaged I want “Never again”! I am now trying trust to get help for damages. Too late smart! Team of one now. Please, how do we work through what can be done safely?

What were your numbers when you were diagnosed if I may ask? Mine is -4.8 spine, so pretty good chance of fracture they say even at 65.
@jimiwho
Also what’s going on right now?
@osteopatient2026
I am grateful for these medications. I did not want to wind up like my sister in laws mother who spent three years in agony with severe spine and hip fractures from osteoporosis. The drugs were not available at that time.
@gravity3
For sure…some drugs seem to be better than others. They need to be used in the correct diagnosis and sequence.

The dexa I had in 2018, I was 59 yrs old at that time, is what prompted the endocrinologist I was seeing for my Hashimotos, to talk to me about bone meds. I had several dexa's prior to that which showed osteopenia and then osteoporosis, but NO doctor ever brought up the subject of treatment, and at the time I was too naive to be looking into anything myself.
So in 2018 - Femoral Neck -3.5, Total Hip -2.6, Lumbar Spine -2.3
At the time I was completely clueless, when the doctor recommended Prolia - I said yes...
After losing 75% of my hair, and constant UTI's, I told the doctor that I would not take the next injection. I had 3 injections in total. That's when I was told I could not stop without the risk of rebound fractures.
I was told to take Fosamax as a relay- and I did that for 6 months, during which time I lost 20% of my body weight, and could barely get out of bed. I had to stop to save myself. So by the Fall of 2020 I had stopped all bone meds.
In July of 2022 the first of 6 pelvic fractures occurred. These were identified as Prolia rebound fractures. I was put on Forteo - within 3 months I was taken to the hospital - I had developed Hypercalcemia- along with the heart palpitations I was dealing with on a daily basis.
I was then put on Alendronate - same situation occurred as Fosamax. And then finally I was put on Raloxifene - besides the hot flashes, I dealt with heart racing and skipping beats. I stopped this on my own.
So in January 2025 - when I met with my endo - not the same one that had prescribed Prolia, she suggested Evenity-----I literally laughed out loud!!!
My dexa this past January, same machine as always, was Femoral Neck -3.2, Total Hip -2.5, and Lumbar Spine -2.0
I finally found a doctor that would prescribe HRT - and guess what???, the Progesterone caused fainting and the Estrogen patch caused the worst racing heart I had ever experienced.
I was not ready to give up, so after a few months, I started Strontium Citrate - built my dose up over a few weeks. Yup, I broke out in a very painful rash all over my body! Once I stopped the Strontium, the rash cleared up in a few days.
The last time I have taken anything for my osteoporosis besides my usual stack of supplements, was at the end of Summer.
In all my life I never had an issue taking prescription medication. Its only my opinion, but I think Prolia messed with my immune system, which it is known to do, and this has led to all the issues I've experienced since taking it.
What is my plan? - continue with my supplements, continue getting minimum 30 minutes a day of exercise, and continue to eat a healthy diet. These things are good for my overall well being anyway. I also focus on balance exercises - which is super important. I know none of this will stop the bone loss.
I am a full time gardener and keep chickens as well. This and my grandchildren bring me much joy - I do not think about osteoporosis.
I have learned a great deal about this condition over the last 5 years, and had I understood that once you start these drugs, you will be on them the rest of your life, had that been explained to me from the start, I would have never agreed to take them.
My perspective is based on my experience, everyone has to make the journey on their own terms.
I hope you don't mind that I laid my full story out - but maybe my experience can help someone else.
