I have had TMJ now for years. I had headaches, jaw soreness, jaw stiffness and the clicking and popping. I did have a night guard made by an oral surgeon many years ago, and used it for quite a while, but then stopped using it because it was hard to sleep with it in my mouth. I went without it for years. I know that I clench and grind my teeth at night because when I wake up, my jaw is so sore. I finally asked my dentist if she could make me a new one. It feels tight in my mouth (probably because it is new) but I am trying to be faithful and use it every night. It is still hard to sleep with it, but I am determined to continue using it to see if it will help me. I already have little indentations on it from my bottom teeth clenching it (It is for my top teeth). I know that I really need it and hoping for some improvement soon! Mary Ann from MA

@mabfp3 I just had a new splint made (had 2 previously and they never fit and still don't) though prior to that I had no problems with them. Had another made and the joint is painful, first time like this for as long as this. I wonder if it's the splint, my first night wearing it, it felt tight the second night it seemed ok. Dentist said she used a previous mold, I wonder if it's the same one used to make the splints that never fit?? I don't want to spend 600.00 on a new splint only to have issues with it. the previous splint she made barely lasted a few months.

I have recently developed this jaw disorder. It started when I was repeatedly biting my tongue on the right side and my cheek looked swollen. I found I could correct that by opening my jaw really wide until it popped and then the tongue biting stopped. But then on one occasion my jaw locked and it took great effort to close it. I saw my doc and I have arthritis in the jaw joint on the left side. I now am careful to not allow my jaw to open so wide, even when yawning. I still get clicking and occasionally I see I am biting my tongue so I open my mouth only until it clicks, not terribly wide and that takes care of it.

I see this as one more issue of aging that just needs to be dealt with.

I wish you good luck.
Donna

@tisme I agree, because these night guards (splints) are expensive! I have had two or three of them made. I guess it is my own fault that I forget to wear them off and on. Then they get very tight. My dentist just shaved parts of it off and it seemed more comfortable. The kind I have can be put in hot water and then it can be molded when I put it in but I haven’t tried that one yet!

got those ones that can be put in hot water, I find them too big no matter what I try. made for sports I suppose not tmj etc.

@tisme
You should go back to your dentist. They can reshape in the office it to fit better.

@prashantnayal123,

You bring up an interesting conundrum here. We have had many members talk about tmj pain, but you mention that you do not have any pain. I would like to invite @pclaire and @cbs61752 back to Connect as they have previously discussed having sinusitis and could share if they have ever had issues with their jaw as a result.

Would you mind talking a bit more about your situation? Could you explain what sinusitis is a bit more? Have you discussed this symptom with a medical professional?

@JustinMcClanahan I havent had much pain until recently when the dentist made me a new splint for my upper teeth/jaw , only wore it once , since then I am in pain all day in the jaw joints. I found out she used an old mold thing. I cant afford to fight her about it so I am stuck like this.
