Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia: Anyone had platelet randomly drop?

Posted by memawof4 @memawof4, Nov 1 12:47am

Not to make this any more complicated than I already am, but has anyone ever had their platelets just randomly drop for several months (about 3-4) for absolutely nothing reason and then go back to normal?
I did just recently have steroid injections in hands and then last week in my back, so they are currently back to normal. However, I can always tell when my platelets start to drop. I start randomly bruising, and I bleed more easily when changing out insulin pump sites or blood draws.
I have not been sick, and not taking anything different.
I do current have another appointment with a specialist to further explore. I’m just curious if anyone has had the same experience as me and it was nothing, or it was something more and I just have never noticed till now.

I also have thrombocytopenia and have been gradually dropping for several years. I see a hematologist every 6 months. There is no plan to do anything about it until I drop to 15 ,000. After being tested for everything, no reason has been found. Yes, I bruise if I barely touch anything. I take Vit K supplements and that slows the bruising a bit. I have no helpful advice. Good luck!

Has your hematologist suggested to do a bone marrow biopsie. This will confirm whether you have pa blood promblem.

I've been seeing a hematologist for about ten years (every 6 months) initially for thrombocytopenia and then he diagnosed MGUS. He has told me he's planning on a bone marrow biopsy at some point but hasn't done it yet.
Male 78. My platelet count is about 20, so I bruise very easily. I've also had two brain bleeds from hitting my head.

Hello Steve, I am a71 year old with MDS patient with Genesis Cancer Institute. Recently I was changed to Dacogen infusions and after the first round my platelets dropped to 9 and was send to the hospital for a platelet infusion. I would be asking why your Dr hasn’t prescribed this given the fact that you have had 2 brain bleeds. Brain bleeds are no joking matter and should be addressed. I wish you the best in your recovery.

Are you at a reputable cancer hospital? I would like to know why he has not done a BMB with your platelet's numbers so low. Being here on Mayo Connect, but treated at City of Hope, I know i must advocate for myself. I hope you ask for a BMT or more to check where your body is in real time.

@memawof4, have you seen your specialist in the meantime? What did you find out?

That is the nature of this condition. Constant ups and downs. It happens to me all the time.

My husband was diagnosed with myelofibrosis in January this year2025. His platelets stay low most of the time he has had 79 platelet infusions since Jan. He had 3 month round of chemo Vidaza, which helped for about a month. Then it was right back down again. He is now on Vonjo which helps with one infusion a week, where it has been twice a week for months. We keep praying for healing. I agree with other post a BMB would take some of the guess work out of your diagnosis. I wish you good results. Keep the faith!
