Does any neurologist prescribe Alpha Lipoic Acid?
R-ALA features very heavily on this forum as a potential remedy for peripheral neuropathy. Does any Neurologist actually prescribe it.

1 ReactionYep. Neurologist suggested. R-ala. I take 1500 per day 1000 am no food better absorbed. 500 bedtime. Some people state they have stomach issues. I never have. I take high quality supplements. All 3rd party tested. S is less expensive. Man made. I don’t know if the R is just easier on the stomach or it’s just me. Also suggest Magnesium Glycinate. Vit B 12. Low carb high protein- less inflammatory diet. Thats good for body and brain. I did take low gabapentin. At first it seemed to help but after awhile not so much. So I came off it.The neuro and I laughed together. I wanted a script even though I don’t take it fot about 2 months. Guess it was like a security blanket thing
Laugh at the small things 😜

Yes.
Also b vitamins.
What does the "R" stand for in the ALA? I can't seem to find the answer on line.
R-ALA (R-isomer): This is the natural, biologically active form that is produced within the human body and found in food sources. It is responsible for most of the compound's beneficial effects.
S-ALA (S-isomer): This is a synthetic form created during the chemical manufacturing process and is not naturally found in the body in significant amounts.

2 ReactionsI work with an integrative medicine doctor and he recommends many supplements and my neurologist said he was onboard with my taking them. I was told to get 300 mg capsules of ALA and start with 300 mgs and increase to 600 per day
500 mgs of L-Acetyl Carnitine and then 500 mgs of N-Acetyl Cystine I also take methylcobalamin 1000 mcgs and sublingual dissolving little pellets by Superior Source and Benfotiamine which is the most bioavailable form of B1
Just make sure none of these will counteract with any other medication you’re taking or interfere with any medical condition. But my neurologist was totally on board. Why don’t you take this list and discuss it with your doctor. If he’s not open minded then look online and you will see many people support taking these supplements. Start with one and see if it improves your symptoms and then build from there. For me the ALA was wonderful as are the methylcobalamin and the Benfotiamine and 500 mgs of L-Acetyl carnitine

Yes. I have CIDP (the p being polyneuropathy) and it worked very well from the first day.
Didn’t cure me but lessened my numbness and tingling in my feet quite a bit.
