Forteo Vs Prolia?

Posted by lorkay @lorkay, Nov 11, 2025

I am considering starting meds for my severe osteoporosis but am weighing the benefits vs the actual increase in bone density. I’ve had two heel fractures first fractures since being diagnosed in 2009
In your experience how long should it take to make a difference to prevent further fractures? Thanks

Anyone with immunity issues might want to avoid Prolia as it is known to lower immunity. I already informed my new endocrinologist that Prolia is off the table for that reason; my oncologist wants me to keep my immunity up. The globulin count on my comprehensive metabolic panel normally hugs the line between acceptable and too low as it is.

Do not think I had ever heard this Prolia impact on immunity issue before. But then as an ovarian cancer survivor of almost 14 years, I no longer see an oncologist on a regular basis. But I constantly strive to keep my immune system as strong as possible.

Thank you for noting this. There appears to be plenty of research literature on this topic. It will have to be a consideration if ever tempted to do Prolia again.

If you start Prolia you will have to be on medication forever.

@rjd I take Prolia and do not have any issues with my immune system. I do take the flu shot every year which is important, also Covid shot. I exercise regularly.

Are you already immunocompromised? Those are the ones the warning is directed towards.

As with all adverse reactions, not everyone is affected. May your immunity remain high.

One might want to review what is contained on drugs.com re the effect on immunity. http://www.drugs.com/medical-answers/prolia-weaken-immune-system-3553497/

"Does Prolia weaken your immune system?

Yes, Prolia (denosumab) does appear to weaken your immune system. Research has shown people who take Prolia are at an increased risk of serious infections leading to hospitalizations, including serious infections of the skin, abdominal, urinary tract, and ear. There is also a higher chance of developing endocarditis (an infection of the heart’s inner lining, usually involving the heart valves) in those who take Prolia, and those with advanced kidney disease have an increased risk of severe, life-threatening, low calcium levels (hypocalcemia) developing, particularly if they have a metabolic condition called chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder (CKD-MBD). For some side effects, people administered concomitant immunosuppressant agents (such as prednisone or cyclosporine) or with impaired immune systems may be at an even higher risk.

Doctors may need to consider discontinuing Prolia in people who develop serious infections or other severe side effects."

Any scientific safe way to discontinue Prolia?
“Doctors may need to consider discontinuing Prolia”
I’ve read anecdotal stories of reclast being used injected two times instead of the usual one time. Seems there is a lot of tinkering going on…

Are you looking for links to research on this ? I'm not sure what you mean by "tinkering".

I agree that there does not seem to be an established protocol to get off Prolia. My goal, with my depressed immunity, is to never start it.
