Whiskey used to be used as medicine. Grandpa used it for respiratory illnesses. Dad said he got a jigger of whiskey every night on his dinner tray in the Army hospital where he was recovering from brain surgery in 1944.

@bunstuffer my teetotaling church-lady Mother (like me) had a bottle of Jack Daniel’s put away. When our menstrual cramps were particularly bad, she would give us a dose (I don’t remember how). This was in the 1970’s. I think she learned it from her Mother.

Im an old nurse, 👵🏻 age 85. In the early years of my nursing career I worked at the large Mayo Clinic Hospital, St Mary’s in Rochester, Minnesota.The Med Room on the medical floor had several bottles of mostly Bourbon.
They were prescribed for patients to help with circulation. It’s seems very old fashioned now but there were no medications that were as effective then.
