Mattress protectors for dust mite allergy

Posted by kariabrown @kariabrown, 4 days ago

Hello! My Dr recently told me I should get a mattress protector for my dust mite allergies. I like the Allerease platinum one, because you can zip off the top for easy washing. But, does anyone with experience know if this will be sufficient? The more tightly woven ones on allergy websites are more expensive and you have to slide it all the way over the mattress to remove. But maybe that is best? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

This is the Allerease one that I have and it's fine. It just slips on like a fitted sheet that is padded. Since the box spring sides don't move, I don't think it can easily shed dust and the mattress sitting on top of it would not be able to pass dust through the top of the box spring. I also use HEPA filtration in the bedroom.

Hi, @kariabrown - I'd have to say the best choice for a dust allergy mattress protector depends on your living situation. Mine slips on like an envelope on our hybrid memory foam king mattress, and I would have no chance of getting it on or off without my husband's help. If I'd have had the same setup when I was single, I don't know how I would have gotten it off or back on.

I think the only poor choice I ever made with a dust allergy mattress protector was one that had fabric that was not high enough quality, such that a hole eventually developed near where my feet would go. That was many years ago, and I think they are all better made now.

I also find my allergies know the exact day we need to change the sheets, as I tend to cough in the bed when it's time. So I have to do it immediately. I do have bedroom carpet and curtains, even though those are not technically recommended for dust mite allergies, just because we want some beauty and human comforts in our room. I also take cetirizine (Zyrtec), fluticasone propionate spray (Flonase) and ipratropium bromide spray.

Do you take any other measures so far to help with your dust allergy?

Hello! I appreciate your response, thank you! My husband works on the road, but next time he is home, we are going to pull up the carpet in the bedroom and see what we have to work with underneath. I’m considering doing laminate flooring with a rug or 2 for comfort. I do have curtains, but wondering about different window treatments as well. I dust with a wet cloth or spray, just to make sure I’m not just swishing dust into the air. I was running an air purifier, but it really didn’t seem to be catching much or doing much good. Some places I read seem to suggest I need a better one. Other research seems to suggest don’t bother with one, just have a good HVAC filter. Last year we moved from in town to an acreage, so there is just a lot more going on, allergy wise, than I’ve ever been used to
