Anyone experienced rapid kidney decline?
Hi, my name is Terri. I’m 68, F, and I live in the high dessert of Central Oregon.
My kidneys have always been fine. Normal Creatinine and EGFR >60 as of December 2024. In January I was FINALLY diagnosed with Polymyalgia Rheumatica and started 20 mg prednisone.
In March I ended up in ER with chest pains. Turned out to be Pulmonary Hypertension from the prednisone, and HFpEF - heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. Basically my heart is working to hard to push blood around my body.
However, my creatinine was 1.7, BUN was 32 and Egfr was 33. Stage 3b kidney disease. Most recent test was creat 1.49, BUN 29, EGFR of 38.
Mind you my kidneys went from perfectly normal to Stage 3b in a matter of 3 months.
Had ultrasound two days ago and they look fine. Urine tests all normal.
Anyone else experience this?
TIA,
Terri

@lindybeans Did you get dehydrated when on the diuretics? Did your kidney numbers ever go back up after adjusting the diuretics? Thank you.
@gingerw , thank you. It sounds like a lot of things to juggle as far as diet. Have you heard of anyone trying Mom's Meals or meals from The Magic Kitchen (renal diet prepared meals delivered to the house)? Is there any hope of kidney numbers going up again (even a little?) I'm Really looking for something positive. Thank you!

2 Reactions@biowicks CKD stands for chronic kidney disease. I’m not aware of a test called CKD (or CDK). The tests for kidney function as @maggieinfp said is a Renal Panel. She described it really well. The most common part of that is the eGFR. It stands for estimated glomeruler (sp?) filtration rate which reflects the overall kidney function. Another valuable test is a Cystatin C test but is less common than the eGFR.

1 Reaction@cehunt57. Yes, I know this. As someone dealing with CKD for 10 years, I've learned a lot. But no one where i live calls a renal panel a CKD panel, so I thought it might be something new. It apparently is a 'regional' difference in test nomenclature! 'They' are just trying to keep us on our toes!

2 Reactions@marsiey No, I haven't any experience with those types of meals, nor do I know anyone using them. Perhaps someone here will be able to chime in. For me, I have other dietary restrictions besides my kidney disease, so trying to combine everything like that might be a challenge using one of those plans.
Hydration, and monitoring what you eat will go a long way to help you get and keep control of your own disease process. Stay away from NSAIDs like Alleve and aspirin, watch calcium/sugar/sodium/phosphorous/potassium intake.

No, but as I was going down and looking at the comments, I couldn’t help but notice your blog. I just want you to know that I will pray for you. I hope everything gets better. God bless you.😍
I discovered my CKD at stage 3. I went into the hospital for cellulitis in my wrist/arm. They diagnosed me with gout. The medicine I was put on, said not to take with kidney diseases! The pharmacist went to bat for me too! I went from top of stage 3, to the bottom of stage 4, which I’ve stayed at! I am now “that” patient who questions everything and reads all the literature on the medications.

1 Reaction@writer2021 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! It can be a lonely crowd, to be someone who stands up for themselves and their health. Good for you for advocating to be your best! It's quite alright to question things.
