Do you smell different to people post RARP and Cancer treatment?

Posted by jayhall @jayhall, Nov 4 2:48pm

I was at my mother's house this weekend doing some odd jobs for her and like she always does she had to be right next to me when I was doing them so that she could supervise and ensure that I was doing exactly what she wanted me to do. Out of the blue she mentioned "you smell different". I assured her that I was using all the same products that I normally do and asked her to clarify. She couldn't give me details but she insisted that "I smelled different". I asked her if I smelt better or worse and assured her I had showered and was wearing clean clothes. She couldn't identify it. I'm wondering If others that have had a RARP or Cancer treatment now smell different to others? Or is it just my elderly mother being her elderly self.

I’ve never heard of anybody expressing this opinion. I attend nine advanced prostate cancer online meetings every month, and I’ve never heard of it.

My wife never mentioned it to me.

Could’ve been you have some incontinence and that’s what caused her to say that? Some people are very sensitive to urine smell.

No smell change with my husband and I have super sensitive nose . My friends and family always tease me that I should have been a sommelier or something similar and make big bucks with this odd ability. Anyhow - maybe your mother has some changes in her smell perception which is very common with elderly. Even sinus infection can effect smell perception. I am 100% sure that it has nothing to do with you !

I've had no incontinence issues and the "leaking" has stopped totally so it can't have been urine smell. Surf thanks for saying that my mom has a super sensitive noise and she's in her 90s and there are some scents she can't tolerate. Maybe I just had on some clothes that smelled off for some reason! Don't know.

Hi, wife speaking here. Yes, body smell on my husband changed. He is on ADT, and with the testosterone gone, so is most of the scent he used to have.

@vancouverislandhiker Vitamins have an odor. Nothing else in your urinary systems has changed. I was a sports official until this past Feb. and would work 5 days a week, sometimes two scholastic games a night, 6 tournament games a day in the summer, and asked one of my partners that I was close enough to if I had any urinary smell, as I had quit using pads 4 months after RP. He said no. I asked my wife and after coming home from games and she stated no . Now, dogs can smell it and I've had dogs walk up to me on the trail sticking their nose in my crotch. Boundaryless fur balls. lol

Thanks for those new comments. I guess my mom is picking up on some slight fluctuations in my hormone levels or vitamin levels. Glad to know I'm not the only one that has noticed this.

@chippydoo Chip , thanks for the info here . It must be the vitamins then . Only when I do go pee I smell sort of a chemical smell but not really a chemical small . Yes , My dogs seem to track it at trail corners where I pee , they go to that spot all the time . I am not on ADT , only had operation 6 years ago, and them EBRT for 22 sessions ( no ADT ) , and that was 2.5 years ago . My PSA now is about 0.061 to about 0.050 , and seems to go sideways . My urologist and radiation oncologist have commented that I have a profile with some healthy cells in the background that are not going anywhere. I was a Gleason 3+4 prior to operation. I always wonder how the urologist and radiation oncologist know for certain that it is healthy PSA cells that are giving me some fluctuation in the thousandth decimal place. I gather they see this every day, 10 hours a day so they would have a pretty good hunch at least.?

Immediately post RARP, I had a weird/different body odor. I never saw anyone else mention it, so I thought it was just post surgery stress on my body. Between the abdomen pain and dangling catheter, there was most definitely a level of stress on the body. Dissipated after a few weeks.

I'm very rarely around other people but my cat still licks my nose to wake me up so it can't be that bad. 😊
