Only 53 with severe osteoporosis and about to fearfully take Evenity

Posted by songbird18 @songbird18, Feb 24, 2024

I am 53 and just got an awful bone density result. (Spine T score 4.1, hip 3.5). The rheumatologist is going to put me on Evenity for a year but I am so afraid after reading about the dangers of heart attack and stroke. The doctor also told me you can’t get any dental work done, but you never know when you are going to have a tooth emergency. I don’t feel I have a choice but to take it because my bones are so bad and my back is in constant pain. I’m wondering if anyone has been using Evenity and how it has affected them. Thank you!

I took evenity followed by reclast. I have a deca scan scheduled for December. Hoping it improved my bone density. Honestly, I wish I started it sooner. I thought I could change my lifestyle and improve. I have lifted weights since college, taught aerobics, and have been very active. I have eaten well, too. I don’t know what I thought I could do extra. My sister is a hiker and gardener and carries her tent and gear on her back. We have osteoporosis just as our parents and grandparents did. We did everything right, but here we are. I wish I woke up to reality and took medicine to stop the decline sooner. Good for you for being proactive. Best wishes.

@kallettla

I get it. I have my own regrets but this is so complicated to understand and deal with.......and let's face it there are too few medical practitioners who are up to date on all of the studies and data. For heavens sake don't beat yourself up. You did the best that you could and you deserve kudos for how well you've treated your body!!! I admire you.

@kallettla My situation is similar. I always exercised regularly (weight bearing), and ate healthy (maybe not so much calcium intake as needed but otherwise) and my grandmother, mother and sister all have osteoporosis so I got it also. I think the DNA part can't be overcome by lifestyle in every case (I'm sure there might be some who have). I am on the 10th injection of Evenity (no problems with this med) and have a Dexa in Jan and then will see what is next. I did not want to take meds at all but I decided I wanted to try to remain active as long as possible and realized osteoporosis is serious and can cause all kinds of issues.

@deborahla I hope the Evinity does us good! I watched my grandmother's long death due to a hip fracture. Five years bedridden and my dad moved into her house and cared for her. She was so out of it for five long years. It was horrible. I am trying not to be her!

@kallettla Sorry about your grandmother. Yes I feel the same, want to prevent as much as I can (though I know you can't prevent everything). These meds are available now and hopefully they can help us.

@deborahla yes, I agree that we can only do the best we can. I feel so fortunate to live in a time of all types of medicine to help us stay healthier...and they are making forward strides. It's a very exciting time!

I am on injection #6 (October).
Having a tooth extracted tomorrow. I have had major side effects from Evenity, like long COVID type flu-ish symptoms for 1st 4 months to severe joint pain now. But, I’m 6 months in ! I have to take a break because of the dental work for now; but it’s a cost benefit thing. Lots of people in this group have no issues what so ever. Everyone is different. I have decided so far to ‘tough it out.’
The injections themselves are nothing but a bother & a pinch. Just breathe & go forth. The gains are with it for me, for now. I have too many friends that have broken their hip & THAT is life altering.

Songbird-
Im 74 and had a diagnosis of poor bone health and in need of a compression fracture surgery.
My Surgeon told me the only chance of him doing the surgery, would be to take evenity for a year and then check my bone health again.
After one year on Evenity and 12 shots later i went in for my surgeon to review the results.
He was amazed, Evenity strengthened my bones enough to proceed with the surgery.
The surgery was a success May5th of 2025. My thoughts for you, is to take the Evenity shots and dont read about everyones problems with the drug- Its an amazing drug and it works. Hope everything goes well for you, All the best, Joe

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis probably 10 years ago. Had problems with the oral meds due to stomach issues so I finally just quit trying. About 2 years ago I fractured T4 and it was an eye opener. I had talked to my family medical doctor on several occasions and he had only suggested I try the oral meds again. I was lucky enough to be scheduled to see his nurse practitioner a few months after the fracture. She really listened and immediately came up with a game plan. After seeing the ortho she recommended I am scheduled to get my first Evenity injection next week. I’m scared to death. My father and both brothers died from heart attacks and reading the possible side effects did me no good at all. I certainly don’t want another fracture though. I have almost constant pain in my back now and my right hip is about 2 inches higher than my left. I will forge ahead despite all my fears and some of the comments on here have made me feel better.

So far I have had two visits for Evenity shots. I have had no reaction to date. Wishing you well.
