I was born with a congenital hip dislocation and had 3 surgeries between the ages of 2 and 15. At the age of 26 (1985) I had a THR. There were 3 revisions, the last in 2006 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. In 2013 I was admitted with sepsis, a massive mrsa infection which later mutated into visa. March 2014 the prosthesis was removed and I spent 2 1/2 years in a wheelchair and on IV antibiotics most of that time. Last summer my case was taken over by another surgeon who deemed it unwise to try another revision and we agreed. A new infectious disease doctor changed antibiotis and I am now mrsa/visa free. I have no hip and no spacers, the femur is significantly shorter, leg length difference is 3 1/2 inches. The new surgeon has me walking with walker and crutches and a 3 inch lift on my shoe. 3 months physical therapy to strengthen muscles atrophied from so much time in the wheelchair. I am about to move to one crutch, and the goal is a cane. Xrays show excellent build up of scar tissue supporting the leg. My original question was wondering if there are others having the same experience.

I had almost the identical situation except I wasn't born with a problem but the rest of your story has happened to me. I have no hip joint or spacer just antibiotic seeds. I'm in a wheelchair since June and I've had 4 surgeries in the past 6 months all due to infections in the replaced hip. My leg is significantly shorter as well however I had the other hip replaced and the surgeon cut 3 nerves and I woke up screaming and had drop foot. I went to a neurologist and he did nerve conduction studies and found the cut nerves and also said my excruciating pain is due to a disease called Rsd. Reflex sympathetic dystrophy syndrome.. It's a very painful nerve disease which you can get from a fall, sprain or surgery. In my case it is from the surgery. I learned to walk on my tip toes but it has never been strong. Stress alone will flare the RSD. Now I can't count on either leg so I'm stuck in this wheelchair and using a sliding board to transfer. I'm 59 years old and I have a really hard time accepting this. I'm on permanent antibiotics to hopefully keep me from getting any infection again. I spent half of this year on IV antibiotics. I don't understand how they can even work anymore. I'd think that my body would be immuned to them by now. I'm happy to hear that you are able to walk. I can't I can feel like the bone in my leg is rubbing against my pelvic bone if I try to stand up. Good luck to you.

Hello, I just created an account because I was researching “walking with out a hip “ on google because my mother in law will be facing this problem soon and when I read your post I thought I was reading her story. She has been through the same situation when it comes to her hip and they are about to take her hip out in a couple weeks and she’s scared to death she won’t ever walk again. Please let me know anything you may find out or any advice you may have.

You’ve met your twin. Lol Similar history and living without a hip since dec 2018.

Hello! I currently have no hip joint or spacers. My hip replacement got infected then removed about a year and a half ago and with exercise I am able to walk with out a crutch. Of course I have a limp cause there’s about a 3 -3 1/2 inch length difference. I use a cane in public to help with the limp. But I can ride the bike walk up stairs it just took some work to get to this point but it’s possible!

After hip replacement surgery 3 years ago which had to be removed because of infection and several more attempts at revision, it was deemed too risky to try again. i currently have no hip and about to start P/T to strengthen what is left. I am very motivated and pray, pray, pray that I should be lucky enough to have half your success in walking. I detest having to have others do for me.

Congenitial multiple displacia hips and knee the worst, but all joints affected. 2005 left hip replaced while yet in hospital left knee blows out, swells to grapefruit size can't walk on new hip. Went into hospital at 5'6" came out 5'8" on one side. Cortisone shot to left knee helps and I could walk on new hip, left knee replaced 2007 followed by right knee 2009. 2010 or 2011 left hip infected hole devbelopes on outside left quads drains fluid runs about a month heals over reopens several times. Non functioning spacer going in Feb 26, 2020.

Hi, my husband is going thru a lot of stuff like you . I would really like to talk to you about this , my husband is going to have his 4th total hip replacement taken OUT any time now. The surgeon is saying his bone disease ( no cure no treatment) has destroyed his pelvis , he broke this last hip replacement in a car accident 😣 in July 2019 . Please please contact me here or on FACEBOOK at LizZi Z Odom on Facebook. Please???? I want to compare you both and see where you are at and where my husband is. Looking forward to hearing from you soon please 😊?? Will be lifting you up in prayers.

My mother 59yo now had THR surgery in 2016. Within a few weeks she accidentally dislocated her hip joint but the doctor managed to locate it in its place and suggested full bed rest for 3 to 4 months after that she was allowed to start walking using a walker. A year and half forward she started getting infectious wounds, painful leg. dr would dress up the wound and prescribe antibiotics. He once did debridement surgery and after that she didn't really get any wound but severe pain. He said we usually remove the implant but because her body isn't that strong to survive two more major surgeries he refused to do anything except for painkillers. We consult a few other orthopaedic surgeons for pain management all suggested to wait unless the removal surgery is the last resort which was performed in Jan 2019 shortly after her boil around the incsision explode. We got her implant removed it was a hip joint and femoral rod hybrid after the surgery there was a long time *months* of her incsision draining fluids *foul smelling blood, puss* i would dress it up thrice a day her stitches took way too long to heal. After her incsision was healed she was able to walk with lose leg using a walker. In feb 2020 i found a boil around the femoral area where the rod was placed in the femoral bone. The boil explode oozing pus the dr got the pus tested it was staphylococcus aureus bacteria and prescribed different sensitive antibiotics for a month the wound was different than what ive seen on her previously with its spreading patern it spread to be a bigger wound with multiple acne like boil burting into forming a wound. Dr stopped antibiotics and suggested to just do the dressing with fusidin and yusol. A month and half into dressing the wound multiple times a day the wound started to shrink with high hopes we thought its healing now until a bigger boil formed around the hip removal surgery incsision bursting into a hole full of pus. There are currently two active wounds on my mother's hip area, she's taking painkillers, multivitamins. She's also diabetic but her glucose lvls are 100-110 in fasting. The dr asked to wait 3 to 4 days and see if the oozing reduces. If not, he would have to perform debridement surgery again. Its been a year since she's without a hip joint but how is it possible to develop a mrsa infection without any foreign implant in her body.

Wow my friend! You have been through hell and back and from the sounds of your letter you’ve still got a lot more gumption left in you. I thought I was having a bad time. Sounds like the change of doctors really helped. I am not living with the same issues that you are just, just looking forward to a total hip revision in the near future. Always had really good luck with my hip replacement that is now 22 years old. I just really have to say that you inspire me. Humans like you are rare. Keep on. And thank you.

My mother had both of her hips disintegrate and they do not know what tissue she is walking on. I wanted to know how you are doing? Can you walk on your scar tissue? She is supposed to get a major reconstructive hip surgery and was wondering if there is a possibility to walk without going through major surgery? Thank you so much! Hope you are better.
