Update. Mom saw the dermatologist about a month ago and got a shampoo and and a creme. It worked well and she told me everything was okay. About ten days ago I asked her how the itching was going and she told me it was terrible and it began two weeks prior to our conversation. When I asked her why she didn't mention it, she seemed confused about when it really began. So I got her the first appointment (today). The more I read about this itching rash and her age (96), I started thinking about what she's been doing lately. She's been throwing away her supplements. She says they're out of date but she's also claiming she no longer takes the pills. I take that as she's pulling at straws that they may be the culprit. She also found a new tube of something that helps the itching. My wife found it in the bathroom and said it's a beauty aide that claims it makes one's skin younger. We're taking it to the dermatologist today for her opinion. I'm beginning to get the feeling this whole thing has something to do with her age and possibly stress. Her hygiene seems good and she gets her clothes and sheets washed regularly. I'm learning there's a big difference between people getting old and really old.

@woojr I suffered with severe scalp itching and would get itchy whenever I would work out in the yard. This went on for years. Sometimes when I would get into bed I would start itching like crazy. I saw an allergist and had the allergy testing and found I am allergic to acrylates. I thought no big deal. I wasn't sure what acrylates even were. Well I found out they are in make-up, hair products, laundry soap (even the dermatologist recommended), nail polish, surgical tape. They are in everything. It was the top allergy in 2012. More and more people are becoming allergic to this ingredient that they are putting in everything. Maybe your mom has this same allergy. It is no fun. I have to get shots of Xolair every month just to keep the itching at bay. My mother had the same thing when she was 98 years old and we tried everything, creams, lotions and it wasn't until she was on hospice and they finally gave her a prescription for the itching that she was able to finally be normal again.
