Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficientcy

Wonder if anyone has seen anybody at the clinic regarding this condition

I see on Dr. Google that coffee isn't good for those of us with EPI. I don't think I can give up my morning coffee and wine as well! Does anyone still have a glass of wine occasionally or is that really dangerous? I'm new to this diet and I find it challenging. @debhammel, I also have diarrhea and you have both collagenous colitis as well. I won't complain.

Thank-you for your reply.
I had an colonoscopy and continued to have diarrhea for the rest of the month. My gastro doc thought it was due to the test. I questioned him as to having diarrhea for a month? And then my PCP ordered 7 poop tests and one of them showed severe EPI and put me on CREON. I'm still trying to adjust to a regimen of small meals during the day, no alcohol and very low fat foods. Are you being followed by a specialist or a PCP? I can't tell you how much it means to have this support group. EPI is quite a lonely disease!

@j18 The ‘no alcohol’ suggestion is mostly because of your liver. The creon and alcohol harm the liver so it’s best to stay away. I’m not sure about the coffee, but I can find out.
I’m on creon, also, and have some of my husband’s wine occasionally. I have an appointment next week so I’ll find out (Gee, I’m going to be doing a lot of ‘finding out’!

You will be a super researcher.. I get my information these days from "Dr. Google." Hope to have a dietician soon. I was under the impression that any alcohol is detrimental to the pancreas. Now, I'll have to join you in "finding out" as well. Many thanks.

Docs are not much help at all. I found a website on Facebook that is really awesome. It may not always be a good read because I see so many people in worse shape then myself. But this disease is all trial and error and (the web site) its like having your own drug trial "so to speak". Unfortunately everybody out there is different and no one is a doctor but if it was not for that facebook sight I would be lost because the gastro I have just prescribes. We all need support with this disease, it is a life changer.. Also the fat thing is tough I have a hard time with the good fats they tell us to try because your always messin around with trying to dose it. Were all test tubes. the facebook website is :

I have the same problem trying to know the amount of good fats to eat. I been given Creon, but I got a horrible reaction. I don't live in the US so ZenPep is impossible to get. I found some good OTC pancreatic enzimes and that is what I'm using.

@mercellort
Have you tried the UK or Canada? You seem to have solved the problem by trial and error. Good for you. I have lived overseas for more than 30 years and found the UK was way ahead of the US in asthma meds for my son. Keep on keeping on!

Apparently, I am not closing my comments. ?

I was diagnosed by a nurse practitioner with EPI ten months ago snd was put on two 12,000 Creon capsules with meals and one 12,000 capsule with snacks. Went to dietitian and was outing low fat diet. Some days are good, but mostly diarrhea daily. Finally saw a gastroenterologist a month ago who read two previous colonoscopies who noted a blockage in my colon. He was not convinced I have EPI as I don’t have all of the symptoms. No pain, no smelly stool. I do have gas, bloating and rumbling of stomach. He put me on a prescription laxative taking one tablet a week. He was hoping to move the blockage. Since then, I have constant diarrhea that amounts to a lot of fluid and not much actual stool. Has anyone experienced these conditions? Suppose to get back to him in two weeks.

@volleyballfan if I was experiencing constant diarrhea from a prescription, I would stop taking the medication and contact the prescribing doctor. Constant diarrhea helps nothing in my opinion but depletes your body of nutrients and causes dehydration. Call your doctor today and let him/her know what's going on.
