Any advice for Double Vision caused by having Dry Eyes?

Posted by lemans77 @lemans77, Sep 28 2:18pm

I have been using Xiidra for a while, it doesn't seem to do much. I have recently begun to experience double-vision because if the dry eye. I have tried many other drops, gels, heat, plugs and nothing helps. Ideas?

Get checked out for Myastenia Gravis. I have fuchs dystrophy and dry eye along with other eye problems but it’s the MG that causes my double vision a lot of the time

Myastenia Gravis was one of the first things I was tested for and it was negative. I have seen 2 opthamologists so far and neither provided me with any ideas for improvement. I take Xiidra and have tried many extra tears and drops with no relief. But thank you for the suggestion, this group is very helpful.

If you described your "double vision" in greater detail you may get some useful advice. Near? Far? Both? Two distinct objects? Overlapping? Vertical? Horizontal? Diagonal? Constant? Intermittent? Time of day? Duration?
These are just some of the questions I would ask to differentiate your condition. It would be highly unusual for dry eye to be the cause.
There may be two separate issues occurring if it's a true diplopia.
Look for a dr. who'll take adequate time to investigate and ask the questions above.
Consider a private-practicing optometrist who won't give you the bum's rush. Your problem(s) is solvable.

@drgbico thank you for the advice.

Double Vision started in Feb almost the same time my daily headaches started. If I am looking at the TV guide on TV, there is a half a character below the original one. Its in both eyes and is mosy obvious in the evening. It both near and far, on the TV as well as on my phone. I have been to a optical Neurologist, a regular Opthmologist, several opthamologists, optomitrist and a dry eye specialists. I've had several MRI's, CT's, a Thyroid Specialisy, blood work and many other tests that I don't have names for. Everything is normal. The headaches and dry eye continue. I requested an appt with Mayo and they refused me. Im at a loss and don't know where to turn any more.

If you close or cover one eye, is the extra image still visible?
Also, if you rinse your eyes thoroughly with warmed saline solution does that clear things up?
Do you have this upon awakening?
Is this always accompanied by headache? And where is the headache felt?
Are you more light sensitive since this started? Do you have a lot of mucus in your eyes in the a.m.?
Would be more convenient if we could talk live. Don't know if this site allows for phone contacts.

Thank you so much for responding I am taking propranolol to prevent the headaches so is hard to tell you when they start but if I go off the meds I will get a headache. They are every day and have been since Feb. I don't think the headaches and double started exactly at the same time but its close. Most of the pain has been on the right back of my head but the pain moves from above my eye all the way to my neck. They have been ip to a level 9 at times. The double vision/blurriness is mostly noticed in the evening. And when I look at my TV I see a shadow above letter on the screen, the shadow is not the entire letter just maybe 1/8 of an inch. But its definitely both eyes and in 1 eye if I cover either one. It's also when I read on my phone. The headaches don't trigger the double vision or vice versa. I don't seem to have a headache at all when I sleep. And the headaches don't start right when I wake up. They would usually start about 10 or 11 in the morning sometimes later.

Do you have prism lenses in your glasses?

No, I was tested but they said they wouldn't help me.
