Recently diagnosed with cka and my one kidney is working at 40% , blood test result. I had one kidney removed in 1991-not cancerous but I was told at the time it was probably not functioning properly since birth.
Thing is I have had 6 monthly blood test every year since then and I was not told of any decline in my kidney function over the last 30+ years. Why would this deterioration occur without setting alarm bells off?

Is the 40% actually your eGfr. If so, for one kidney thats pretty good. Can potentially be fine for years and go down suddenly. Did they diagnose your ckd stage? Your creatinine is the test that matters most. What is your doctor planning?

Doc is doing nothing! He just told me the result a week ago and left it at that but I have an appointment coming up in the next week so I'm going to tackle him then. I am going to ask for a referral. CKD stage has not been mentioned just yet.
I am going to ask for the Cystatin C test when I see him which I'm told is more accurate.

if you are seeing a nephrologist already and he is giving you advice on what to eat , what weight to target and you still have questions that need to be answered like me. try to get him to give you a referral to speak or see a dietician . i did that and it really gave me some great suggestions on what to eat, what to limit and goals for every day watching salt, potassium , phosphorus and also animal based proteins which are the things most important to ckd stage three kidney disease patients with type 2 diabetes like me. I am going ahead and getting onto the NovoNordisk PAP program to get 8 months of free Ozempic. It was something my dietitian sister in law suggested I do as well as get a referral from my PCP to see a dietitian firm named AM dieticians . all very helpful in my quest to a healthier diet, kidney disease management and controlling my weight . Im 5'7", 71 , male and I weigh 172 pounds . If I lose 10 pounds from Ozempic I'll be right where I need to be. Hope this gives you some ideas

I’m also adding nuts and nutritional yeast! It all adds up!

Found out the unsweetened licorice is a no-no for my kidneys…glad I didn’t BUY A BUNCH! 🙂

Hi, I am 21 years post kidney transplant (unmatched from my husband). My potassium runs low and my team recommends a banana (or potato or tomato) a day. As regards fruit, yes, starfruit is toxic for renal patients, but I was cautioned that before & after transplant, no grapefruit, no pomegranate, no pomelo fruit, limit oranges and high sugar fruits such as grapes & mangoes. After so many years, not an issue for me.

Bananas are not good for kidney disease, yet I read that they are…

Check on line. Check multiple sites and especially check who is providing the information. I tend to assume NIH is reliable. But not everyone knows what they are talking about - but are very confident. Star fruits are off limits as are avocados but not the oil. Be your own advocate. Doctors usually have the information provided by someone else. A very few do their own research. Adding problems with high potassium will complicate things. I try to maintain a balance and realize it is not entirely achievable

If you have high potassium levels, I was told no bananas. My potassium was a bit elevated at one time, so my nephrologist "prescribed" two pieces of unsweetened black licorice per day. It works!

@susangail53 Glad it works for you. Others should be careful with it. A known side effect of licorice is elevated blood pressure.
