Is there a negative interaction taking probiotics while on prednisone?

Posted by cany @cany, Oct 26 12:46pm

I have been reading several conflicting articles re taking probiotics while on long term prednisone use and wondering what others have experienced. I have been on prednisone for 3 years and now down to 3mg. Prednisone has taken a toll on my gastrointestinal system causing bouts of diarrhea. Thus, I would like to try probiotics but hesitant due to the cautionary articles.

You might be right. I stopped taking Align which is supposed to be one of the best probiotics, and I do remember having D on those once in a while. They so expensive too, so I’m happy to have found something else.

@jabrown0407 yes I take the prednisone with food, have not used NSAIDs, and consulted PCP. Prednisone use coupled with 81mg Aspirn needed to prevent a future stroke has been a challenge. I posed my original question to get a sense of others’ experiences with taking probiotics with prednisone. I have a dairy allergy or would be utilizing the consumption of yogurt or kefir. Appreciate any and all feedback. Much thanks!

@cany Aspirin is the grandfather of all NSAIDs. NSAIDs are Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs and aspirin is where it all began. They can be OTC or Rx drugs - the Rx ones are all stronger than the OTC drugs.

Aspirin is known to cause internal bleeding if not taken and monitored properly and can even cause GI ulcers in some patients. Please proceed with appropriate caution and guidance from your prescribing doctors.

I wish you the best on your PMR journey. Hang in there.

I have been on prednisone for 14 years now started at59 spent 2 years reducing from 25 mmls to 0 then after 2 years it started again went back to 5 mmls and can’t go any lower ,I have tried Lefluamide and after 2 weeks my fingers and started to itch and burn (which was one of the rare side affects) stopped straight away
My rheumatologist put me on metatrexate and going to see how it goes,I was quite happy to stay on predisone 5mmls it was manageable but not good for long term
