PSA levels increase. When to be concerned?

Posted by debdebkrz @debdebkrz, Sep 30, 2024

Hello. My 52 year old husband had his PSA level checked last September and it was 1.1. In April of this year, a cardiologist added a PSA level to a group of other lab work and it came back as 3.3 but nobody addressed the increase (not his specialty I guess). Last week at a free screening a urologist noted the increase from April and said above 3 is high for his age. Plus the fact of the degree of increase, it warranted another check. The repeat last week is now 2.35.
We are still waiting to hear back from the urologist but was wondering if just the fact that it was 2x what it was last year, is this cause for concern? Or does this sound ok?

To those not sure about all the tests, stats and timing of the "PSA warning signs" like all of us non-medicals going through this journey.... My inept Urologist (No More!) had me under observation for YEARS watching my PSA increase while I was complaining to him the whole time about enlarged prostate, urination issues, etc. and all he could do was Pad his Bank Account with $15 & $30K procedures (Rezume & Aquablation) that NEVER, EVER considered my elevated PSA tests as a precursor to Cancer! Well, the $30K Aquablation quite accidentally revealed a suspicious area both in and out of my Prostate from the PHOTOS they took before exiting the procedure. Yup, Adenocarcinoma. Gleason 7 (3 & 4). Prostatectomy, 38 days of Radiation, and yes my body has been corkscrewing into the ground for 2 1/2 years largely because of the dreaded LUPRON (ADT) injections. So yeah, make sure you have the very best Doctor and I would suggest a medical center like Mayo or one of the others. I didn't. Went with my local western Colorado medical group and a new Urologist/Surgeon from a reputable Urology Practice. Still waiting to get my BODY back but no signs yet!!!! All I got. rlm

Sept. 29 through Oct. 10 I had a bad UTI. My MD ordered a PSA, which I had done on Oct. 13, a few days after the UTI had run its course. My previous PSA (a year ago) was 1.4. My PSA from last week was 11.3. I was terrified.

I'm 64 and have a history of urinary strictures, a bladder diverticula, and probably an enlarged prostate. They made an appointment for me to see urologist next Monday. I could understand a UTI making PSA jump somewhat, but that much - 1100%?

@jimabassplayer I had a PSA of 4.8 in 2017. Urologist said let's wait and see what happens. PSA went from there to almost 10 and back down to 5 in 2 years. Then it stayed between 5 and 10 for 4 years. In the next year it hit almost 14. Biopsy was done and I had cancer. While waiting to start treatment, (my RO made me wait almost 4 months), my PSA spiked to 22. I had 28 sessions of radiation and I am 8 months done. My last PSA was 4.4. My point is your PSA can go up and down pretty fast and yours was a years difference so that is possible. It could be it is growing faster than normal but this stuff is unpredictable. Once it's over 10 probably a good idea to get a biopsy to see what's what. Good Luck.

Your result is considered good and undetectable👍. You should just watch for any future increases and act accordingly. My husband also was gleason 9 and we intend to do test every month for the first 6 mos. I personally think that with gleason 9 and especially if combined with high decipher score ultrasensitive PSA test is preferable since doubling time and upward trend could be noticed earlier.
PS: Just one small correction - your cancer is grade 5, not stage five, I know it can be confusing, thought you would like to know 🌺 Wishing you the best of luck and may your PSA stay that low forever 🍀🍀🍀.

I took the advice from the good people on this website. I asked for a new urologist got an MRI and a new PAC level which is now 9.2 and I am now going next week for a fusion biopsy. I don’t know why I wasn’t offered this two years ago instead of doing the biopsies were caused so much pain and bleeding. Thank you for your reply. I hope all is well with yours. God bless.

Question everything I do believe other things may make PSA levels rise. My PSA level started off at three then five then seven no nine and I have a slow growth cancer and I am on active surveillance had an MRI and I’m going for a fusion biopsy. please see if there is a medication that can lower your PSA or ask for a MRI before doing anything best of luck God bless peace

Have your husband request through oxford biodynamics or your urologist or GP the PSE test. It is a blood test that looks at 5 genetic biomarkers and with 94% accuracy, tells you if your husband is likely, or unlikely, to have prostate cancer.

Thank you everyone!
The urologist was satisfied with the 2.35 level and emailed to tell him to continue with the annual PSA screening next year. I think I would be happier with a recheck in 6 months because of the increase from 1.1. But then again, this is NOT my area of expertise.
My fathers had been around 4 for so long that increased to 6, further tests to find was PC, had Robotic procedure (ralp) - has been good since.
Thank you again for your replies and stay healthy!!!
