Prolia treatment for osteoporosis: What is your experience?
I received the results from my bone test and they have recommended I start Prolia. I have read the side effects and I am concerned. Has anyone use this drug and if so what side effects have you experienced. Thank you

@mjg35 lucky you! As my endocrinologist said to me, "you must be prepared to be on it for 10 years." (although side effects may not permit in my case). After 6 1/2 years, does "some improvement"this mean you have are no longer osteoporotic and just have osteopenia? My results after 18 months were better than what the doctor was anticipating. The thing with this drug is once you start you can never stop without having a backup plan in place.
mjg35 We are all different what works for one won,t for another . OUr bodies makeup is unique to us Im glad when people get a positive outcome but its a crap shot with all drugs especially bone drugs I went with vit. min. more minerals then a regular One a day has in it and remember as we age we lose a lot of our vit min in our body Its best to have a blood count of these to see what you need .
@mjg35 It's great to hear positives among so many negatives. I'm glad you are doing well. What did you improve from and to?
JK
@mig35, Thank you for sharing this information. Can you tell us what "some improvement" means? What have your scans shown in 6 1/2 years? Have you been told how long you might be continuing with Prolia? We appreciate knowing your experience.
Chris
Femoral neck T scores went from -3.3 to -2.7 (left) and -2.9 to -2.7 (right). However, it seems that I may have now plateaued on Prolia so we are looking at other options, such as Tymlos.
Please look at other options... without drugs and get best results!!! Look for Osteostrong center in your area they are getting some amazing results, I was in Osteopenia, in ten months I have reversed it!!!:-) Best you go only once a week for 10 minutes...
Way to go, lexusgs300. I'm doing OsteoStrong as well....feeling so much better, better balance, and in just 3 months have increased my strength from first visit by over 200%!!! SO Hopeful!!!!

I can definitely see alternative methods when you have osteopenia, and particularly if you are pre-menopausal and still have estrogen floating around. Good chance with diet and exercise to maintain what you have and slow down the bone loss overtime. Once you are already osteoporotic, not so easy.
I think there must be with this condition/disease greater emphasis on prevention. There should be public health problems targeting children, teenagers and young adults while they are building their bone so that they achieve an excellent peak bone mass.
A good thing to remember is that we rebuild our bones every 10 years (I've even read on some ortho sites that its every 7 years). And we continue to do that until we die....So....we just need to be conscious of what we're putting in our mouth that helps bone growth, what hinders it, be sure to stay hydrated, and exercise. As a bone doctor told me a few years ago when I was sent to him for a -3.4 score, it depends on heredity, diet, bone architecture, bone strength, etc not just on a DEXA score which actually doesn't measure TRUE density (mass per unit of volume), but measures AREA density (mass per unit of area). Plus, he told me that my bone loss was most likely due to all the prednisone I had been on for many years....which, if I got off of I could probably speed up bone growth fairly quickly.
