Well, I have been on my inhaled tobramycin for two weeks. Started feeling bad a few days ago, lt. green sputem coming and going. Then today; developed stabbing pain in right side whenever I cough, or blow my nose. Thought it strange that I could come down with something while on antibiotics. I read that it is possible. It feels just like the times I have had pneumonia before. Called my Dr and he put me on Levafloxacin and still wants me to continue the tobramycin. That is what I am up to. How are the rest of you?
I have a sinus infection that I’ve had for over 45 years. Can’t get rid of it no matter what antibiotics they put me on.
I had tons of problems with my tonsils before I was 18. Finally had them out when was 21.
I’m 63 now.
They even put me on Cipro 750 2x a day for a month. It didn’t even touch it!
The only antibiotic that still works is doxycycline. I live in the central
Oregon high desert where the humidity is very low. I get flare ups when I go to
To the willamette valley (Portland or Salem) the humidity is very high there!
I can’t even stay 2 days there because the flare ups I feel will kill me within a week.
It gets into my lungs and the coughing is so distressing I pass out!
The doxycycline will knock it back down as long as I get back to the desert.
But it won’t get rid of it.
The drs. Are very sparingly giving me doxycycline because they feel if it starts to have no effect I’ll have nothing to use against other infections.
Anybody have any ideas?
@mp3542
Is it Pseudomonas you have in your sinus? Interesting that Doxy works so well for you if so. Have you tried inhaling saline through your nose? There is a special neb cup for that.
@irenea8 I have used Netipot rinses to exhaustion.
I try to drain my sinuses before I flush them out.
I bend over and about a 1/4 cup of puss will come out of each side. Then I use the water pic.
I have mixed the sinus rinse and warm distilled water directly into my Water pic. I crank it up to about 1/2 power. Full power would blast your eyes out of their sockets.
I wash a ton of puss out of both sinuses.
This takes me about an hour to do this.
It just got old doing this every day.
So I just try to drain them each day.
@irenea8 I’ve also had 2 sinus operations.
They have ruined the my sinus linings so that if I do wash out my sinuses every day they will bleed for 2 hours.
ENT Drs. Say the pseodamona infection is in the bone so they can’t cut it out. I can’t let this rule my life.
So I just live with it.
This just sucks!

3 Reactions@mp3542 So sorry to read your long withstanding sinus troubles. Sounds horrendous. Have you consulted with an infectious disease doctor? Was the pseudomonas cultured before, during or after surgery? Do you also have bronchiectasis?

I really feel for you. That sounds awful and you are so brave to deal with it. Of course what choice do you have. I wish I had anything to suggest. Really send you hugs and support. Is there such a thing as an inhaled antibiotic that is done through the nose?
@mp3542
I believe there is a compounded inhaled antibiotic called Gentamicin that is used to treat chronic bacterial sinus infections. You may already be aware of that. Very best wishes to you.

1 Reaction@mp3542 Is there a possibility you could have a bacterial infection and a fungal infection and the doctors aren’t treating the fungal issue? Sorry to hear of your situation. Lots to deal with, with the BE too.

1 Reaction@mp3542 My sinus issues haven't been nearly as severe as yours, which sound miserable. I had frontal sinus infection when diagnosed with bronchiectasis. The local ENT referred me to a frontal sinus specialist. Since appointment was a couple months away, he gave me usual antibiotics, but also had me use Tobramycin eye drops in my nose while in a head hanging position. (I'd lie across bed with head over edge.)
He also had me use NeilMed saline rinses 2x/day (saying kayyy while squeezing it in). I'd had ear issues with neti pot. Infection cleared by appt time, but I was still hoarse and doc took look and vocal cords covered in yellow mucus despite the nasal sprays and antihistamine. He ordered Mometazone for the sinus rinse bottles and I've only had one sinus infection since then. Again, mine was not as serious as yours.
Just mentioning it in case you can use any of the ideas.
