Taking Calcium without D supplementation

Posted by busymomof7 @busymomof7, Oct 21, 2025

I have been told to take my calcium WITHOUT vitamin D. I have unusually high levels of vitamin D in spite of stopping D supplements in 2022. My understanding was that you have to take D with the Calcium in order to absorb it but my doctor said my high levels of D already in my system are all that is needed. Does anyone have experience with taking calcium without the vitamin D component and if so, what kind of calcium did you take? Also, does anyone have any insight as to what might be causing the high levels of D? I do not take any supplements currently other than a multivitamin and calcium with D. I do not eat anything that is rich in vitamin D so it is not coming from my diet-which is what my doctor said is causing my elevated levels. Thank you

I want to take vitamin D because my levels are very low, but it's such a huge capsule I can hardly swallow it. Are there any smaller capsules that you'd recommend?
I have trouble swallowing tablets.

@grrranny I take 1,000i.u. vitamin D in gelcap form. It is very small and easy to swallow. You can even get D drops or D gummies.

I have difficulty swallowing large pills (and certain foods too), but I can do it without a problem if I take a mouthful of water with pill in mouth, then swallow with my head down (as in looking at the floor). A friend’s nurse taught her that trick and I have used it after hearing about it from her.

Most people don't have enough Vitamin D and supplementation is necessary. I would think that you would not need to supplement it if your vitamin D is high. I don't think it matters where it comes from that that you have it. Not sure about how K2 would fit into that since Vitamin D/K2 is the new thing! Have you asked your doctor?

@grrranny how much vitamin D are you taking? There are so many brands out there you can find smaller capsules or tablets. But someone recommended gummies. I use Nordic Naturals D3/K2. I know some say gummies aren't the best but if you get a good brand what does it matter. You might have to take a little more to get the level you need! These days with supply issues sometimes it's hard to find the usual brand. I am going to try Sports Research Vitamin D/K2 as they have good reviews and it's a small gel cap. They go down much easier.

Do u eat a lot of fish? If you’re not getting vitamin D from the sun, it could be excellent nutrition. High doses of vitamin D are found in fatty fish: salmon, mackerel, sardines, herring, & trout. Also canned tuna (be wary of mercury), egg yolks. Some foods are fortified with vitamin D: milk, yogurt, plant based milk, OJ.
