Does anyone treat their neuropathy without pharmaceutical drugs?

Posted by annashby @annashby, Feb 1 3:56pm

I’ve recently been diagnosed with neuropathy and given gabapentin for pain. I am concerned about the many side effects of this drug. I don’t know why I have this condition as I am not diabetic and have no pinched nerves in my spine. I’m 78 and pretty healthy except for this. I exercise at the gym 4-4 times a week and walk several miles when I don’t go to the Y.
Anyone have suggestions for me?

try talking to a sports doctor to figure out where the pain is coming from and hopefully find a way to stop it

Consider changing your diet. Avoid inflammatory foods such as dairy. Avoid many food groups initially and if that helps, add back one group at a time slowly and carefully. I find an extreme difference in neuropathy and can now "stray" a little bit occasionally. I live GF DF low FODMAP low fructose very low nightshades. I also take Low dose Naltrexone from a compound pharmacy. I'm also chemically sensitive and very careful what's in my environment and frequently wear a mask re odors and pollen and such. And of course stretch and exercise. Yes, very time consuming. But I'm 83.

ALA and magnesium glyconate plus heat has greatly helped my peripheral neuropathy . I did Gabapentin Lyrica and Cymbalta with no relief and horrible side effects.

No nervedrugs helped me. MORE EXERCISE and working on my lumbar helps. The corticosteroid yesterday in my coccyx area worked wonders! My leg/foot nerve problems originate in damaged spine nerve roots affecting my leg. Mostly my left. Try a MFR therapist!!!

If you have nerve pain, burning, pins and needles, etc., you can try alpha Lipoic acid, Acetyl l carnitine and magnesium supplements. They have helped me when my small fiber neuropathy was really bad in my feet. Also, capsaicin and lidocaine creams and patches can help with localized nerve pain. Compression socks can help some, too, if your neuropathy is in your feet/calves.

I would not recommend capsaicin, that stuff burns worse than the nerve pain. You will feel like your on fire for 3-5 hours. I tried it 6 times and each time I wanted to die because how bad capsaicin burns.

@mademoiselle I tried capsaicin 6 times and each time I used it it made my feel burn worse than the actual neuropathy. My feet and legs where I put the capsaicin burned so bad I thought I was burning a live. It took like 4-5 hours before the burning of the capsaicin wore off. I had to stop taking it because it burned so bad. Maybe it won't make it feel like it is burning you like it did me.

It sounds like you are in good health and doing well in the exercise department. Diet can play a role in the world of neuropathy as well as environmental conditions. I find heightened sensitivity due to my neuropathy but no need to take prescription medications. We need to be patient with and understanding of our bodies. Our minds have alot to do with this. Also, I recommend sleep to refresh the body and mind.

I cured my neuropathy with magnesium capsules and tart Cherry juice. . I know of 2 ladies with spinal stenosis who use the combination to control severe cramping and leg pain.j if you take some of the Gastric meds it interferes with your magnesium absorption one of the culprits is Zantac . Hope it works for you

Scotch on the rocks works great. The pain goes away, you’re in LA LA Land and you sleep well too. Just be careful walking as you might stumble and fall. Whiskey is ok, but Scotch works better. Hic!!!
