I have experienced chronic heartburn for years. Then, at age 66, I was diagnosed with intestinal/colon cancer. I was put on Omeprazole as part of my cancer treatment. That was 14 years ago. I was lucky enough to survive this long without a cancer reoccurance. However, I currently experience occasional nausea and I blame omeprazole. I would like to get off omeprazole because of these annoying bouts of nausea and throwing up. When I don't take omeprazole I experience one day of renewed energy until the stomach acids kick in. I'm wondering if anybody has successfully found an alternative medication to omeprazole that works for them?
@artgirl7: I took Omeprazole 10mg for about 10+ yrs. Stopped abruptly and replaced with an over the counter Famotidine 20mg in am! I have been on this regimen for several yrs and only had one gastro-reflux episode after a spicy late night dinner ( I know better!!!). Check with your doc, but this has resolved my reflux problem and also the risks of long-term Omeprazole usage. Hope this is helpful. Best health to you! Bette
Agree that Pepcid - famotidine - is the best alternative. I was on Nexium or Prilosec for a very long time and it became a trigger for the microscopic colitis i now have. It took 2 a day for a short while when I first switched but I have been one a day for 3 years.
Supplement with tums when necessary - but that happens rarely.
Does anyone who has IBD - ulcerative colitis, know how famotidine will affect it? I have reflux, sometimes very bad, and just suffer because I choose that over uncontrollable diarrhea. But I know the long term problems with reflux and need some relief.

@jlmp - this - how famotidine would affect those with UC - would be an excellent discussion to start in the IBD support group on Mayo Clinic Connect, if you're so inclined. You'd go to the home page for that group https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/inflammatory-bowel-disease-ibd/ and go down below the blue box on the top to where it says "Start a new discussion +" just a little ways down on the left side.

I got multiple 5-15mm bleeding stomach polyps from Nexium after being on it for MANY years. I just weaned myself off it and no issues at all! Makes me wonder if I ever had GERD. Had an endoscope and nothing bad showed up after being off Nexium. PPIs are evil to your system. Get an alternative or get off them. But work with your doctor.
I've been on 20 mg of Omeprazole for 20 years for Baretts. I recently read about the side effects of long term use and now realize that my poly neuropathy and kidney disease could very well have been caused from taking this drug. My Gi doc, keeps telling me would I rather have Esophageal Cancer or the side effects. So recently I ask to be put on famotidine and after three day started having major reflux that continue for four days straight until I went back on Omeprazole. The problem I have is I'm on Prednisone, and Mycophenolate both of which can cause or lead to reflux. My PMR is in remission, and I am hoping to return to famotidine after I get step-down off prednisone and Mycophenolate.
I'm no sure of your age, but has your doctor considered surgery to get this under control? Have. you had any treatment for the Barrett's? I would consider possibly a second opinion or maybe a less problematic PPI. I'm sure you're already doing all the dietary precautions for reflux. I hope you're able to wean off the Prednisone, or a least get down to lower dose you can tolerate.
Sounds like a good plan.
