Prolia treatment for osteoporosis: What is your experience?

Posted by Veruska @veriska, Mar 7, 2017

I received the results from my bone test and they have recommended I start Prolia. I have read the side effects and I am concerned. Has anyone use this drug and if so what side effects have you experienced. Thank you

I have received one injection of Prolia and I am struggling with constipation to the point where I am not willing to continue with the Prolia. My doctor dismisses constipation and back pain as non side effects of Prolia. I have had long standing constipation uses d/t taking an antidepressant, hypothyroidism, statin drugs. I have seen a gastroenterologist with suggestions for fiber. Fiber makes it worse. I am taking miralax. Has anyone else suffered from this?

@ harper2018 I have had IBS-C forever. I have now had 3 prolia injections and am due for the 4th in November. My tolerable and manageable constipation problem has become severe . As in your case, the endocrinologist seemed dismissive of this side effect. (I have read that constipation is a common side effect and is a reason why some people stop taking it.) Anyway, I continue to soldier on. I have stopped using Miralax, Milk of Magnesia and now use Sennokot on a fairly regular basis. I just recently found a product over the counter in the drugstore called " The right fibre 4 IBS Intestinal Discomfort Low Fodmap". It is made by Webber Naturals. (webbernaturals.com out of WN Pharmaceuticals in Coquitlam, B.C. 1-800-430-7898.) Like Miralax it dissolves in hot or cold beverages and has absolutely no detectable taste or grittiness . I have found that daily use of this has somewhat reduced my usage of sennokot and reduced some of the senna side effects. The fibre comes from guar gum and is a prebiotic. Instead of every two days every four or five days. I still suffer from quite a bit of bloating. Since the prolia, gastrointestinal I have never felt right. However, my bone density has improved significantly. I return to the gastroenterologist on Oct.7th but based on past experiences am not sure what can be done. He prescribed Linzess known as Constella in Canada and I had horrible pain from this med-- impossible to live with pain from that drug (at two different doseages). Sennokot with mild cramping is preferable (for me). I am just reading your message today eventhough you posted a year ago. So, it does seem that constipation is a side effect for some.

Why are you doing this to your body? Prolia is not for everybody. I decided that, for myself, it is not worth the risk.

I am at high risk for fractures and that terrifies me. And, is it the prolia for sure that is causing this? (I think so). Also, I have read that after already having three injections, you are now at risk for a fracture! if you do not start on another med and the thought of taking forteo is super scary. My next injection is scheduled for November, have time to decide.

Hi. Do you take anything else? My DR. prescribed Fosamax for me but I'm afraid to take it. I know I need something because my last DEXA Scan is a lot worse than the previous one from 2 years ago.

Did you continue with the Prolia injections? And if so, did you replace Prolia with something else? I have been dealing with this same issue (constipation, bloating, lower abdominal pain) which has worsened over time. My bone density has improved significantly . Due for the 4th injection in November.
I also seem to have even more back pain since being on Prolia.
Miralax stopped working for me. Now using sennokot.

I have been on Fosamax for 10 or 11 months now, once a week, with no side effects. I follow the directions explicitly. \Although it will not strengthen the bones, it supposedly keeps them from getting worse. My neighbor was on it for five years with no side effects, but she is on the five-year break from it now. A rheumatologist suggested Evenity for me because she said I could not take any other bone-strengtheners after having radiation for cancer (many years ago). Evenity was disapproved by the FDA until finally being approved last April. Its possible side effects include stroke and heart attack. Not my choice! Good luck to you. God bless.

P.S. Please remember exercise and activity are vitally important.

Thanks so much for the information. I think I'm going to give Fosamax a try. God Bless.

The Prolia has a Black Lable Warning in several countries outside the USA. Spine and femur fractures have been reported . More people
are reporting serious side effects. Ask questions
and read the European and Canadian recent Study.

Hello. I am new to the group and have just been prescribed Prolia. I was on Forteo but hit my limit. Based on my T scores Fortero did nothing for my back. I am at -3.5 at this point. Apparently, it helped my hips (if the very confused girl on the phone gave me the correct information.) My hips went from -2.1 to -1.9. I am 57 years old. I have many back and neck issues. Fractured a few ribs a while back while leaning over the back seat. That's when I found out I had a problem. Reading the side effects of Prolia has me a little concerned. Are you seeing positive results using the drug?

A follow-up bone density after two prolia injections (one year later) resulted in significant improvement to both the spine (larger percentage increase in the spine)and the hip. Fourth injection scheduled in November. First injection at the age of 63.
