Prolia treatment for osteoporosis: What is your experience?

Posted by Veruska @veriska, Mar 7, 2017

I received the results from my bone test and they have recommended I start Prolia. I have read the side effects and I am concerned. Has anyone use this drug and if so what side effects have you experienced. Thank you

I had to wait a year for bone density scan.

Are you in Canada or the U.S.? Why the wait? After starting Prolia, it is normal to wait one year. Takes that long to know if the drug is effective. Or is the wait for another reason?

Hello @hilsy,

I appreciate your sharing about the new drug, Evenity. All of us with bone-thinning problems look forward to hearing of new drugs to treat this problem.

As I had not heard about Evenity previously, I researched a little bit and found this information on drugs.com. Here is the link, https://www.drugs.com/nda/evenity_190121.html. The manufacturer also has information available but often that is harder for a lay-person to understand.

Here is a link, however, to a press release regarding the drug, https://www.amgen.com/media/news-releases/2019/04/fda-approves-evenity-romosozumabaqqg-for-the-treatment-of-osteoporosis-in-postmenopausal-women-at-high-risk-for-fracture/.

@hilsy, are you asking about this drug for yourself or for a family member?

I also read some of this. I think that the increased risk of heart attack and stroke means that this will be reserved for a select number of patients. I was able to use Forteo (the one where you give yourself a daily injection using a pen). It can only be used for two years. It is the drug that gave me the most dramatic increase in bone density.

My endocrinologist 's advice was to prescribe Forteo for the allotted time to be then followed by Prolia. I chose to just start with Prolia (understanding that the increase in bone density would not be as rapid). The "side effect" of osteosarcoma worried me as there is so much cancer in my family. (grandparents, mother, sister, brother, first cousins). Also, I have that ventricular tachycardia arrythmia and I had read that some patients experienced a racing heart after the injection. So, that's why for me, (and who knows if it was the right choice) I opted for Prolia. Now I'll shortly discover if there has been any improvement.
This new biologic Evenity seems to have both the bone-building feature of Forteo and the slowing of the breakdown of bone properties of Prolia. (Notice it has a warning related to cardiovascular issues). There never is the perfect
no side effect drug! (On the otherhand the long term side effects of a broken hip are horrible).

Positive Prolia results! Bone Density test revealed 11.4% improvement in the spine and 6.5% in the hip. My endocrinologist was very pleased with the results. If only I had taken her advice and started Prolia four years ago. I see things differently now. For those who may be worrying about the side effects of the drug, I now believe the side effects from a fractured hip would be ever so much worse. Calling the nurse in the osteoporosis clinic tomorrow to book my third injection. (And so far, no side effects).

I agree! My mother and her four siblings all had broken hips. I do NOT want to join them.

Exercise is not my thing! Just watched the news segment on Mick Jagger who at 75 is bopping around 6 weeks after heart valve surgery...oh, to be like that. Hoping to be inspired.
