Prolia treatment for osteoporosis: What is your experience?

There is a medical site called "Medscape". My cardiologist uses it. Search articles related to osteoporosis medications and osteonecrosis of the jaw. There is a very recent article on this topic. Most oral surgeons are aware of this issue and deal with patients on these
meds.

in Medscape I dont see any articles on osteonecrosis of the jaw....I only see a this statement ~ Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a condition found in patients who have received intravenous and oral forms of bisphosphonate therapy for various bone-related conditions. ~~ Is there a full article about this ?

I do have one question i would like to know if a endocrinologist can prescribe Prolia, due to my PCP said he is not willing to prescribe such drug?

My endocrinologist prescribes it for me.

I am not sure how to post on this site. I have been on Prolia for 7 years. I am 63. I was put on it after 2 years of Boniva because my hip reading went to -2.8 at age 57. I have never had any side effects and my bone density readings are normal or osteopenia. Has anyone out there had success with Prolia? I am told that after 10 years I should stop but the consequences seem dire. Has anyone successfully weaned off of Prolia? Has anyone used Strontium Citrate for that? I do weight bearing exercises, take calcium. I only hear horror stories. I understand that the bone density tests aren't giving the true structure of the bones when on Prolia. Any replies would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I thought Prolia had not been around for very long. I thought it was a newly prescribed drug, but you said you hv been on it for 7 yrs. So you had Osteopenia when you were put on Boniva ? Am I understanding that after Boniva even tho you were in Osteopenia status, you were put on Prolia at that time? Or are you writing that after having been on Prolia you status went to Osteopenia?

I highly recommend a consult with an endocrinologist. My internist described endocrinologists as the IT team of the body. They are incredibly smart and have to know how all the body systems work together. If you have not seen one yet why not ask for a referral?

I don't think you will be disappointed.

Prolia was approved by the FDA in 2010.
