Severe Iron Overload caused by too many IV Iron infusions
I'm a 65 yr old man, with 2 prior cancers, currently cancer free? I have a condition called Iatrogenic Iron Overload, ( iron overload caused by medical treatment). I developed chronic anemia from external beam radiation in late 2021. I was treated with External Beam Radiation for Prostate cancer that caused a radiation burn in my descending colon. I was referred to the Cancer Center of N. Dakota in Grand Forks, ND in mid 2022 for chronic anemia. Over 9 months I received 13 IV iron infusions and the doctor never checked my ferritin levels until after the last infusion. It was 2149 ng/ml. I tested negative for Hemochromatosis. Two months before any treatments my ferritin level was 49ng/ml. Now I have systemic Iron in most of my organs including my bone marrow, lymph nodes in my lungs, my liver is severely overloaded with Iron. My left kidney atrophied and was removed in 10/2023. My Pancreas was discovered atrophied in June of 2025. I don't qualify for Chelation therapy because I only have 1 kidney and it has Stage 3A CKD. My Oncologist/Hematologist ordered 4 phlebotomies, but those were cancelled after the 1st one because my Hemoglobin dropped to dangerous levels. Finally after no treatment at all for the high serum ferritin in my body for almost a year, I was referred to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Mn. I have my first appointment on 10/03/2025, to see if they can do something. I pray that they can help me otherwise my prognosis is grim. When the Ferritin reaches my heart, it will deposit in the tissue and muscles and my heart will no longer function. I'd like to hear from anyone who is or has experienced Iron Overload, especially if it was from a doctor who could have prevented this, if he'd only done periodic ferritin level checks in between IV iron infusions. God bless and I hope to hear from someone?

Something is wrong with that doctor. I checked his name to see where he was trained and found his profile on Wikipedia. Dr Potti on Wikipedia is a shady character. I hope that’s not the same doctor that treated you.
@myoga , You should google Anil Potti, Duke University Medical Center. Yes it's the same doctor, but wait till you read what he did at Duke Medical Center.
@guyjeff123
OMG! Why is he still practicing? Why can’t the medical board recind his license? He caused and continues to cause harm to patients as long as he’s allowed to practice.
I’m so sorry that you were treated by him. Though it’s impossible for your iron level to drop quickly without treatments, miracles do happen. I hope this is a miracle. Please update us on your journey. Wishing you all the best.
One of the MAYO doctors called me the day after I was dropped and was very nice. He said if my ferritin shoots back up, to call him. In the meantime, he's going to be following my Hematologist, not Potti, who's treating me here. They are a partner hospital to Mayo. He too stated that kind of a drop without treatment isn't medically probable. I chalk it up to an answer to my prayers. Thank you
@guyjeff123 yes I have been dealing with iron overload from dextran iron infusion.
I have been taking chia seeds (put in juice about 30 minutes prior to consuming because they will increase in size when combined with liquid) and CoQ10 to help my body get rid of excess iron.
I have been taking bacillus coagulans probiotics to help with joint pain from excess iron.
I have been taking small amounts of methylene blue to help my mitochondria regain function.
I hope you feel better soon
@harmony510 Thank you for your suggestions. I'd like to hear more about your progress, if you don't mind sharing. My ferritin level is around 1000ng/ml right now. I only have one kidney, so chelation therapy is out of the question. I did have 2 phlebotomies one week apart about a month and a half ago, but my hemoglobin has not only dropped below 11 since the 2 phlebotomies, it is continuing to go down. Currently it's at 9.8. My Red blood cells and my hematocrit are also going down at about the same pace.
I have read your posts with great interest and would like to follow your journey. I, too, have high iron overload and it is caused by blood transfusions. In simple terms my bone marrow does not produce enough red blood cells and my haemoglobin level is low. I am required now to have 2 bags of blood every 3 weeks which of course does not help the iron overload. Previous history was breast cancer in 2016 and I have the red blood cell problem “because it was just the card I was dealt”. I had radiotherapy and chemo. I am currently having chelatin therapy which is to take 2 tablets daily. This is a light dose as I cannot tolerate higher. I am in Australia and it seems to me that you have access to more medication than I have. My very best wishes to you. Would love to follow your journey.

2 Reactions@wakeley I don't think you really would. I only have 1 kidney. I can't even have Chelation therapy. And since my bone marrow also has ferritin in it, I'm not producing enough healthy red blood cells to have anymore phlebotomies. I'm in poor health, with CHF and a bunch of other comorbidities. Everything my team of 6 Specialists could do to lower the amount of ferritin in my body either will cause my only kidney to shut down or it will lower my hemoglobin so low I could end up with Hypoxia. The doctor that poisoned me with IV Iron infusions did a good job of it. After 13 infusions my ferritin level was 2149ng/ml. That was 2 years ago. Shortly after the infusions, my left kidney atrophied, and in June my Pancreas atrophied. But that's what ferritin levels over 1000 do. They either shut down organs or they cause Cancer. My situation is not an enviable one to have. I pray that you are doing better than I am. God bless you. I do have access to all the right drugs and procedures, I just can't take the drugs and I can't have the procedures. I wish you the best. I fear my journey won't last much longer. I'm praying for a miracle.

2 Reactions@wakeley I truly thank you for the hug and you are welcome to follow me if you'd like. I don't know how often I'll post. It's just going to be depending on how I feel physically, mentally and emotionally. I'm scared. I'm ashamed to admit it but I am. I'm 65 years old and I'll be 66 on January 3rd. I never thought I'd live this long. I was a severe alcoholic and drug addict until July 18th, 2009, when I gave up alcohol and street drugs for good. At 50 years old I went back to college to become an addictions counselor. That's what I did the remainder of my working life until the second of two cancers I got. The first was prostate cancer in May of 2021, and the second was in March of 2022 while I was still being treated for the first cancer with radiation., and hormone therapy. The second one, cancer in my left Ureter was treated with chemotherapy. I retired on 1/3/2022 at 62 years old and applied for disability, which I got in October of 2023. I was and still am cancer free, but the node in my lungs is large and growing and the lesions in my liver are very large. I believe these were caused by the morbidly high ferritin levels, which have already caused my left kidney and my pancreas to atrophy. But that's what ferritin does. It's a Systemic wide overload. I pray first that God will heal me and secondly that my doctors can keep me alive. Thank you for listening. and God bless you.
