Has anyone had SI joint pain following a lumbar fusion?
I had an L3-4-5 lumbar fusion in May. 3-months post op I began to have hip pain. After meeting with my Neurosurgeon, he informed me that what I am experiencing is SI joint pain. I also have lower back pain, and groin pain. This pain is horrible. My Neurosurgeon has referred me to a Pain Management physician to get SI joint injections. Has anyone ever experienced pain like this following a fusion?

I should have added that Prolo is just sugar water. They say it will irritate the area to stimulate the body's natural healing. However, if nerves are being pinched by an aging back or scoliosis, there is no natural healing.

Hi Migual, I had an operation for spinal stenosis almost 2 years ago. The result was I went from 10 painkillers a day to 5. I was never completely free of pain.
Accupuncture alone helped. About 3 months ago, my accupuncturist suggested that we try a combination of accupuncture and a lazar treatment.
"I'm in heaven."
After the first treatment, I thought, hmm, I'll try a few more. I've been completely painfree for almost 3 months.
I was getting treatments weekly at first, then every two weeks. My accupuncturist went away for three weeks.
When she got back, she asked me how the pain was? I looked at her and said, "what pain?" She repeated her question three times and then I said I hadn't had amy pain while she was gone.
I no longer have back pain. I can sleep briefly on my right side, then it becomes uncomfortable but not painful.
After having a tooth removed from my upper jaw, my lower jaw became extremely painful. My accupuncturist could not do the double treatment because it was too close to my pacemaker. Darn! And triple darn.
As far as lazar goes, my vet has used it on my little 13-year-old Poodle/Bichon Frise as well.
I can't say enough about the accupuncture/lazar treatment. Just don't expect it to work completely after the first few treatments. After about 4, I really noticed the difference. I strongly recommend it. BTW I went up to about 4 painkillers after my tooth was removed. I'm down to about 2 a day now.
I'm not planning on going off the Tramadol/acetomenephen completely. I tried. I'm glad I didn't because the jaw pain was as bad as the spinal stenosis pain.
Hello- I'm fused from L2-L5, but not down to S-1. I've had severe pain which was located at L5-S1 and the R SI by a SPECT scan. I've had a few injections but none have provided much relief. The most relief has come from a PT who specializes in working with neuropathy and other neuro-type problems. She has worked with me to tighten my core, gradually so I don't get into fatigue and can't do the exercises. It has been absolutely fabulous. Their practice is limited to neuro rehab, geriatric, and occupational PT. I flunked out of a regular PT because I could not do the exercises required, due to too much pain, to meet their goals. I'm grateful to my neurologist who knew about this specialized PT practice. The only other option I've been given is to have a spinal cord stimulator implanted, but I decided to explore other options first, and I'm very happy with the PT work I'm now doing. To read about this specialized PT practice, go to SPARK Rhab Bend OR. Maybe there is a similarly specialized PT practice near you?
Yes, I had fusion from S1 thru L5. I have pain, numbness in left leg and foot. And some numbness in the right foot. A neurologist tests revealed the problem was the nerve on L5 is being affected. I'm planning to go to Vanderbilt University for surgery to alleviate the situation. I had the surgery in Florida and should have stayed with Vanderbilt neurosurgeon!!
Severe hip arthritis should also be ruled out.
I had Laminectomy L3-L4 then discovered I had a few fractures in that area. Next came the Fusion L3-S1. That was a little over a year ago. Since then I have experienced pain in that fusion area, my waist line and buttock and hip area. So next came the SCS pain implant. That help some but the pain my but and hip still existed and was getting worse. Learning more this was my SI joint supposedly causing problems and after injections in both SI joints, the pain decreased for about a week and half, but came back with a vengeance. Pian Management now wants to do a cudal epidural in my tail bone area. My frustration keeps mounting because im not really for this possible next injection. My Neurosurgeon discussed a possible SI Fusion. Has anyone had this done and did it help????

1 Reaction@greg58 I’m dealing with something similar. I had L5-S1 fused along with a laminectomy in February in hopes of being and to do more with my young son. Well, that had had the opposite outcome. My lower back hurts even worse. It it’s my si joints. I am terrified of having another back surgery because this has been really hard on my life in every way possible and in my opinion didn’t work. (Yes every issue at that level was addressed and the hardware is fine) but I’m in so much pain now I can’t hardly do anything! I’m scared I’ll go through the b si fusion and end up worse. That’s why I’m on this is to see if anyone has a similar experience and has gone through the SI fusion and what their results are
