Scared of Abaloparatide injection

Posted by mandie4712 @mandie4712, Oct 9 10:39am

My rheumatologist wants me to take the Abaloparatide injection ( Tymlos) but I’m terrified of the side effects. Has anyone used these daily injections so I can decide whether to try them or not.

@njx58, Sodium Acetate Trihydrate in Tymlos is a diuretic according to Google. Mannitol in Forteo is a diuretic according to Google.

@drsuefowler Interesting. My brief research says that the Mannitol in Forteo is inactive and helps to stabilize the drug, vs. Mannitol that would be injected to act as a diuretic. Not sure what to think. I haven't had any issues with Tymlos, but certainly people need to know what they're taking.

Do your side effects last all day or are they only for a little while after doing the injection. Does it affect your bladder as well as if I took it in bed I’m stuck there so the bladder issues are a big thing for me. I’m really starting to think it’s not worth starting this treatment as every day my pain is bad so I don’t need anything else on top of this as it’s affecting me mentally now and becoming very depressed. Obviously I don’t want another fracture but I also don’t want to suffer horrible side effects either.

I just started Tymlos 15 days ago, after doing research on most of the available osteoporosis meds. All of the meds have some side effects, including jaw bone necrosis for Fosomax and Prolia, and stroke or cardio potential with Evenity. Tymlos makes me a bit lightheaded after I inject but it doesn't last for long. It also seems to cause some increased sensitivity to body areas that already have problems. E.g., I have neuropathy in my toes, so now the toes are a bit sore where previously just numb. My hands are sore, especially my thumbs which was a prior symptom but since using Tymlos a bit more sore. Could be from working out with 2 lb hand weights. Meds alone are not the answer but light weights and tension bands are an added plus. Also taking supplements -- calcium, magnesium and vitamin D3/K2. I am a former marathon runner and active all of my life, but have chronic pancreatitis and cannot use the tablets and must inject. The side effects so far are pretty minimal for me. I do get up during the night for the bathroom, sometimes twice, but that is due to the amount of water I drink and pre-existed Tymlos injections. The bathroom frequency has not increased.

I need to start Teriparatide injection but I’m really scared of the side effects. I’m disabled and cannot walk at all. I heard this injection can cause you to need the toilet several times after taking the injection. I can’t get out of bed b6 myself. I am so confused 8 don’t know what to do.

The only thing I can find is that Forteo might increase the amount of calcium in your blood, which can cause more frequent urination (and possibly cause kidney stones.) That's a MAYBE, though. If you are going to take Forteo, the doctor is supposed to give you blood tests to monitor all this.

Have you discussed other medications with your doctor, like Prolia? Maybe it would be better/easier for someone in your situation?

@mandie4712 See what happens. No sense worrying about possible side effects until it happens. One day at a time!
