3rd CT scan of lungs

Posted by al6 @al6, 2 days ago

1st scan showed 6mm nodule
2nd scan 6 months later stable 6mm solid nodule and a 5mm nodule of same. Also calcified granuloma.
3rd scan showed both nodules stable at 6mm recommended no follow up on those but now see Gound Glass Opacity and recommend another 6 months scan for that. No mention of the Calcified granuloma.
I have had shortness of breath for a year now. Have not yet talked to primary since getting 3rd scan in MyChart. Has anyone had similar scans. What should I be asking. Thank you for any feedback.

hi @al6 - lung nodules are often benign and the only way to know for sure is with a biopsy. that said, tiny nodules are difficult to biopsy, so they are often managed with a "wait and watch" strategy. have you seen a pulmonologist? if not, I would do that as a next step and ask them at what point a biopsy would be appropriate for you. they should also be able to help you manage your shortness of breath.

@al6, I understand your frustration with this situation, I have been doing this for 8 years and I never get used to it, I think a lot of people would say this. I agree with mamajite, the nodules are very small so they are difficult to work with, this is often the reason why they wait because it would be very difficult and risky to do anything too soon. I think they are looking after your health and staying connected with you, this is the best way to stay on top of things if anything changes, best wishes to you.

I agree with others, you should see a pulmonologist (one that follows nodules, Specialists have subspecialties).
Regarding your shortness of breath, you might start with the Pulmonologist. There are multiple causes of SOB including heart and lung.
Four years ago I started with mild shortness of breath when getting up in the morning. I discovered I had multiple causes.

Hi al6- when they scanned my lungs the first time I had a spiculated nodule that was adenocarcinoma. I also had many calcified nodules and a 3 mm and a 4 mm solid nodules. I was told I had Valley fever at some point but we don’t know when. Anyway, those two solid nodules have been stable for many, many years, so far. My surgeon and pulmonologist aren’t worried about them. After my CT scan they had me have a PET scan. The only thing that “lit up”, and barely, was the spiculated nodule. I had an EBUS bronchoscopy first to get cells and lymph to check and no other cancer cells were found in other areas. They then did the surgery on that spiculated nodule, left upper lung- Segmentectomy- and then biopsy on it after removal. It was about 8 mm at first and 9 years later was at 22 mm. I had to get scans every 6 months after, for two years. No changes in the tiny solid modules. I have “graduated” to scans once a year. Our lungs create nodules for infections, inflammation, etc. you should ask your PCP to set you up with a Pulmonologist who can look at your scans. They definitely know more about your lungs and reading CT scans. Good Luck and I pray for a good outcome for you.🙏🙏🙏
