Anyone have "cough variant" asthma? Vocal cord dysfunction?
Anyone else on the forum with cough variant asthma? How about vocal cord dysfunction or the two together?
I have struggled with cough variant asthma for many years. Recently I was also diagnosed with vocal cord dysfunction as well--specifically irritable larynx syndrome. I've had voice therapy, but I'm interested in other ways people are coping with the combination.

@5148branelly it’s basically a plastic bottle you gently squeeze. Concept is kind of gross but it actually works so you get used to it. I bought it at Costco
@drsharon
It arrived today, so I’ll give it a whirl tomorrow!
Many conditions have in common the symptoms of coughing, post nasal drip, and sinusitis. Sinus rinses with saline solution can be very helpful in clearing sinus mucus and irritants, along with warding off sinus infection and coughing. I have found ALKALOL NASAL WASH , which is a mucus solvent and cleaner can be added to the saline solution ( follow directions on back of bottle) to really clean and refresh sinuses and helps greatly in allergy season( year round for me). It is available on line if you don’t find it in a drugstore.
I also have been using one spray only of Astepro Allergy nasal antihistamine instead of Allegra. Goes right to the problem area! May be drying so find your own schedule as symptoms direct.
Another thing anyone with irritation in the throat and sinuses and lungs should look into is Silent Reflux. Different from Gerd and can be greatly helped by diet and initially Pepsid (Famatodine) but NOT omeprazole which only targets acid reflux and is very hard to withdraw from. Look up the little book “ Dropping Acid” by Koufman, Stern and Bauer. It explains Silent Reflux and gives great lists in red or green print of foods that you can or should not eat or drink. Takes a few months of trying to be good and conscious of how we eat but it Does work! Then you find your triggers and work your diet around them. I have EGPA and am on Nucala to control my other symptoms, but sinusitis is not much affected by it. I have found Alkalol sinus rinse ( I use a Waterpulse nasal wash bottle) along with the Astepro nasal spray is helping me a lot and avoiding sinus surgery which I have already had twice and does not solve the problem in my case. Just comes right back. Good luck to all of us, and we should all invest in kleenex!
God bless us every one!

@5148branelly there are nerves on the bottom of our feet that “speak” to the cough center of the brain.
@SusanEllen66 and @5148branelly, the home remedy of putting Vicks VapoRub on your feet may help stimulate sensory nerves in the soles of the feet to interrupt the cough cycle has not been proven. There is no scientific proof that putting Vicks VapoRub on your feet will help ease a cough and other cold symptoms. Even so, many people swear that rubbing their feet with Vicks and covering them with socks lessens the severity and duration of the common cold. It can be soothing.
Here's more information on the benefits and limitations of Vicks VapoRub:

@colleenyoung all I need to know is that it works!
Yes, I have the coughing asthma. However, at times, I do wheeze, but for the most part it is more coughing than anything else.
I do have 2 lung nodules, has anyone else here have the lung nodules? Mine are very small, just found this year. I do have shortness of breath, Immune Deficiency-CVID, ongoing cough, shortness of breath and chest pain at times. I have found Singulair has really helped my shortness of breath/asthma a lot. I started taking it 2 months ago.
@5148branelly
Have you been tested for any type of immune deficiency? Having constant phlegm isn't right all the time. I have CVID-Common Variable Immune Deficiency, and I get a lot of sinus infections each year. So far this year, I have had 3-ear/sinus infections. Before treatment 6-8 a year. I was miserable. There are over 400 immune deficiencies. See an immunologist if you get worse or would like to get tested. I take infusions now once a week and my antibodies are on a permanent vacation, so I put new antibodies in my body. It does help reduce the amount of sinus/upper respiratory infections that I have. Or maybe see an Alternative Doctor-Functional Medicine. I use the netti pot a lot and Navage and they both help me. Hope things improve for you.
I’ll check it out.
Thanks!
