Please pray for me- Thyroid Cancer, too?
Hi Friends. I had an ultrasound this morning to rule out Hoshimoto's disease and make sure my hypothyrodism was chemo-related. Unfortunately, the early results look like I may have some thyroid cancer (unconfirmed) but there are two nodes with high to intermediate chance of malignancy. SO- who has experience with this? It's been a year since my diagnosis with HPV-SCC- base of tongue and a couple of months since my "Cancer free" PET scan. I'm sad. I'm angry. And I also feel really good and hate the thought of another round of cancer treatment. I love life and want to keep living it!

My thyroid cancer was found in a lymph node that was removed during surgery from HPV related tongue cancer. Prior Thyroid biopsies had all been negative. Once I finished chemo and radiation for the tongue cancer I went back in and had my thyroid removed. I did not have any further chemo or radiation for the thyroid cancer, just removal.
Stay positive Julie and continue to fight the good fight!

Hello @jkhagen1. I am so sorry to that you are being hit with potentially another cancer diagnosis so soon. I know that feeling when you are finally starting to feel normal again and have hope that the cancer journey is over then that roadblock appears and stops everything again. I have had this happen due to metastases 4 times over 13 years since my initial surgery for SCC in my ear canal. It is so deflating getting that news when things seem to be going well. If and when you do get another cancer diagnosis, you need to look at this as a little speed bump in the road you are now traveling. We have no guarantees that our cancer will not recur and some of our treatments predispose us to new cancers as well. What you will find out is that you are stronger than you know, and you have a great team of health professionals to get you back to where you want to be: cancer free and feeling good. Keep a positive attitude and accept each challenge with the same hope you did the first time. You will get through this.
A supportive book that has provided hope to me: How Not to be My Patient by Ed Creagan MD, a Mayo palliative care physician. Be strong. Be positive. Have hope.
Hello Julie, I am very sorry to read of a possible thyroid cancer for you. I had nodules that turned cancerous on my thyroid about a year ago and they removed the thyroid and one of the nodules. They called it a “stage one” cancer and in Nov and Dec, I have to follow up with bloodwork, an ultrasound and a visit to the endocrinologist. They will most likely remove those two nodules that are concerning but know that the surgery itself isn’t bad at all and after a few days, you will feel back to normal. I will say a prayer for you that nothing has spread any further than those two nodules and with removal, you will be fine again. Please keep us posted. All of my best wishes to you. @jkhagen1, I see that you have received helpful responses from fellow members, like @mabfp3 @sepdvm and @sandy8043, who have had both a head and neck-related cancer and also diagnosed and treated for thyroid cancer.
Despite having already been through cancer treatment for squamous cell carcinoma, I'm sure you have questions about thyroid cancer. I added your discussion to the Thyroid Cancer support group as well. See discussions here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/thyroid-cancer/
Julie, what is the next step for you to confirm or rule out the diagnosis?
