@lorenap
Welcome to the blood cancers and disorders discussion board for Mayo Clinic connect. Our members are, generally speaking, not physicians, although I’m sure we do have physicians who utilize our support groups and chime in. We are unqualified to answer your questions that are best answered by your physician. I did do a little digging in the Mayo Clinic online stacks. I hope this might be helpful to you.https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/thrombocytopenia/symptoms-causes/syc-20378293

Patient portals are both a blessing and a curse as the information often gets out there before the physician has had an opportunity to talk to us and explain what these complicated lab results mean. So I think it’s important for us to advocate for ourselves and when there are things that alarm us, or we don’t know whether we should be alarmed or not. We need to contact our physicians and express our need for clarification. Sometimes that means we have to get a little assertive about it.
Also keep in mind that it’s not so black and white as “yes, be alarmed,” or “no, you’re OK.“. Coexisting conditions, age, general health, and even state of mind all play a role in how disease impacts us.
Mayo clinic connect is a wonderful resource for getting support and I’m so glad you found us. Even if we can’t answer all your questions, there are people here who have been down the same path. It’s a great help to me. Will you let us know what you find out and how this goes for your hubby?

I have been diagnosed with thrombocytopenia for about 20 years (male, age 78). My most recent platelet count was 74 a month ago. I've learned to just live with it. We keep emergency blood stop bandages in the house and I bruise easily. I've had surgeries with low platelets and it's never been a problem as I tell the surgeon ahead of time.

I also have MGUS.

You need to address this and I tell you why. 2021 my platelets were 110, then 2022 they were 100, then 2023 they were 90, then 2024 theywere 80. I. 2025 they dropped to 14. Dont wait as Imade a big mistake as i probably had MDS for a few years but no one looked into it.
