Paxil doesn’t seem to be working.

Posted by ellemccope @ellemccope, 3 days ago

I have been on 10 mg of Paxil for Generalized Anxiety Disorder for 3 weeks. It does not appear to be working — no noticeable change in my anxiety. I have also been experiencing daily nausea from the medication. Has anyone else had this experience? Do I need to be patient and give the Paxil more time to work?

ellenmcope, supposedly it takes 4 to 6 weeks for the full benefit of Paxil. It might be best to continue for the six. I wouldn't be able to tolerate the nausea, though.
Paxil increases serotonin throughout the body and most especially in the intestines, though the brain is the target. It stimulates nausea signals to the brain. Your body should regulate the levels after you've been on the medication a while. You might try taking it at night. But always take it with food.

The doctors usually tell you to wait about 4 - 6 weeks for the drug to kick in, I feel the affects very quickly but I’m medication sensitive… I used Paxil many years ago for GAD/PTSD, it helped me a lot for about six months but afterwards I began to feel numb or also called emotional blunting but I continued to use them for over a year. If you don’t react fast to this medication and you have taken them past six weeks, I would recommend letting your doctor know and he might change your prescription, also there are some people who don’t respond to certain medications like Paxil and they have to try numerous different medications to find one that works for them.

what a thought, every person is different, did your doctor give you a time frame for it to start being noticeable? i would think that you would have known something ny now. Ask again or have him or her increase it would be my conclusion. ask your Doctor.

@randallshields56 No, she hasn’t given me a timeline, but I will definitely take your advice and ask about a possible increase in dosage.
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I’m very grateful!

@gently Yes, the nausea is nearly intolerable. I keep hoping it will get better.

@ellemccope try eating crystallized ginger or any pure ginger candy, or smell a lemon. You can also get anti nausea wrist bands. Perhaps any of these will help with your nausea as you wait out the six weeks or so till you get over this side effect to your medication.
