Treatment Center Options - Aggressive Prostate Cancer

Hello - my BIL (61) had his first PSA done a couple of months ago with a 7.1 result. MRI and biopsies showed Gleason 9 with PNI and swollen pelvic lymph node. PSMA CT scheduled for next week. Urologic oncologist said very bad cancer. Can anyone recommend a treatment center that may be better than your standard local oncology team - Mayo Clinic? MD Anderson? Johns Hopkins? Thanks

Mayo Clinic in Rochester (Dr. Heath). UCSF, UCLA, Memorial Sloan-Kettering, Dr. Eleni Efstathiou works at Houston Methodist Oncology Partners. And there are a whole lot more. If you gave information about where you live, we might be able to come up with a place near you.

I don’t have a list of doctors in New Orleans. Maybe somebody else can answer this.

If you attend the next ancan.org weekly advanced prostate cancer meeting they can give you information on what doctors are in your area. The next meeting is October 6 at 5 PM Pacific time. Get there 10 minutes early and they will not only answer your question. They will help you with information on your treatment. If you go to the website and sign up, you will get a really good newsletter about the meeting and with a lot more information. You can also watch the previous meetings, so you get a feel for what’s going on.

While they meet weekly, they only meet four times a month and this month has five weeks.

I don't know where you are located and how far you are able and willing to travel, but my husband has been a patient at Mayo Rochester since 2011 and we recommend Mayo highly, not only the urology department but all other departments you might need in dealing with prostate cancer. We have had great experiences with urology, radiation oncology, medical oncology, surgery, and nuclear medicine, as well as the lab and imaging staffs.

@johndavis60 Dr. Sartor was at Mayo Rochester for many years and recently moved to Tulane. He is terrific.

Just make sure you consult a multi-discipline center of excellence (typically a university medical center) to get objective treatment options across a broad spectrum of modalities.

Remember, if you are a hammer everything looks like a nail. Some MDs only offer a couple of treatment options and they don't present a range of options to their patients as they want to sell what they offer

The 2025 'ASCO' conference Abstract 325 is summarized in a You-Tube video featuring Mark Scholz MD of the Prostate Cancer Research Institute (PCRI.org) fast forward video to 4.15 minutes. Of course the PSMA PET CT scan info when available is important.
