At 77 years old, how much exercise can I do?
I have been attending various exercise groups at the Andover YMCA. Lifting weights and swimming. Sometimes I have muscle soreness but generally the exercise energizes me. The Andover instructors are amazing. Try Body Pump, Group Power, and Forever Well classes. Anyone else doing this?

The approach that works for me, at almost 82, is to have fun, not baby myself, and stay consistent. My goal for the past four years has been to walk a half-marathon with a 32 lb weighted backpack or rucksack. My program includes various strength exercises and walking with a weighted rucksack, 5-7 days a week. I also do farmers' walks, pull a car tire, or walk with weights in each hand. Being a former farm dairy boy, the farmers' walk is my favorite. Again, it's all about having fun. Currently, six miles is the best distance with a 32-pound weight rucksack.
As the saying goes, "Don't Fear Failure, Fear being in the exact same place next year as you are today."

16 ReactionsYes, thanks. Some people think you shouldn't work out or lift if it hurts. No, lifting and exercising should hurt. I don't mean like a broken bone or a torn muscle kind of hurt. You are inspiring! Keep it up.

4 ReactionsI make sure that I get my flu and other shots every year. Make an annual checkup with the doctor who checks your whole body health. Exercise is good for your body but also eating the healthy food is necessary. Don’t smoke or drink in excess. You’ll do well.

5 Reactions@howardrlewis I think you mean take it to discomfort not pain. For strength exercise this means only a couple of reps before failure. For me all strength and aerobic exercise has always been discomfort. Never have I thought I rather exercise than have a bowl of ice cream. Sure, at end of exercise can be a feeling of accomplishment or doing what is best, never before an hour of strenuous weight lifting or 2 miles at 8 to 10 minutes per mile.

5 Reactions@5148branelly that is great to hear! I have wanted to do that since my 30’s but something always seemed to prevent it. But I just learned that the Senior Center in my county has classes! My balance has improved with 2 months of physical therapy targeting lower body strength and balance .. and I am signing up! !

4 ReactionsI do Silver Sneakers classes 3x a week. And, before class, I do 10-15 minutes on the stationary bike, followed by a few weight machines for stomach, waste, legs and arms. It is great!

2 ReactionsLet's make sure our food, sleep, stress management and mental/cognitive area are also well-cared for otherwise we won't reach close-to--optimal our physical self. That is to ENJOY the feel of the trembling in your muscles as I do my 6 push-ups on my 82 y.o. body. Just a friendly challenge with My body; no need to Compare with anyone EVER!
For a quick heart beat raising I do kicks-with-full force so that my Other foot too leaves the floor momentarily. It's a unique kind of JOY. Try!
