Does anyone else have issues with piriformis

Posted by craigslefknee @craigslefknee, Sep 18 6:00pm

I have been having piriformis muscle pain for at least two years. It presses against the siatic nerve causing electrical shock type pain to my foot. Seems to have gotten worse since TKR 9 weeks ago. It aches when walking for extended periods and the real bad pair comes when lying and turning from one side to the other. I have had epidural injections which help some but don't cure the issue. Any advice would be appreciated. Have done PT for it but nothing seems to really help.

I don't know if I have piriformis syndrome. Have not been diagnosed with it. I have had pain in the piriformis for 2 years but as I stated it seems to have gotten worse since TKR.

My PT therapist massages each time I go, usually 2 times a week, and it is just as bad, if not worse, by the time I go back. Extremely painful even when she is messaging. We both think the main problems are arising from my back, along with the change in gait after my hip surgery. Seems it's always something!

@valleygirl1955: I sure sympathize with the piriformis butt/hip pain. Do you also suffer from sciatica?
I don’t know if this will help you, but when I suffered a friend suggested arch supports for my shoes! Walmart carries a support for about $20 that corrected my problems in a couple days! It is a white, hard plastic with a soft spot in the center. I can’t remember the name. If you goggle WM arch supports you should identify.
It corrected my back problem!
Maybe this will help you? dbamos1945

I do have sciatica and curvature of the spine and degenerative discomfort disease. I have purchased and tired many different arch supports but none of them completely solve the problem. I do know that if I wear shoes without a good arch support; I suffer even more. Good shoes are a must for me!

@charley1 ask your PT what the cause is.

i have had piriformus syndrome for 30 years. Tight butt muscles pressing on the nerves interwined with the muscles. Exercise helps and NOT SITTING to for long! Also, when things used to send me through the roof a shot of Torodol in my butt resolved everything until the next time. I no longer have that kind of flare. I walk and stretch regularly and see a MFR therapist 2x a month. I am 68. Used to both me HORRIBLY at 40. There is hope!

Having my spinal lumbar surgery in 2018 probably helped a lot straightening out from L3 to L5. It probably took a lot of pressure off my wonky lower back. The best thing I ever found to resolve most of my lower lumbar problems was Pilates. Even if you do an old person‘s version of that, I’m sure you’ll find some relief in that.

I HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE FROM WALKING WITH A LIMP AFTER TKR. I DID SHOCK WAVE THERAPY WITH ELECTRIC ACCUPINCTURE AND AFTER 3 TREATMENTS WAS TOTALLY GONE.

That is great to hear a $20 set of arch supports got you out of pain. Great tip to share here. Congrats & thank you.

Wow, how wonderful you are keeping it at bay now. Nice to read about someone getting better. Thanks for posting this. I'm gonna chk out the T med. Haven't heard about that. A variety of 5+ injections never helped me. Maybe T will. Thank you. All the best.
