Dr taking me off Prolia to start Evenity
My Dr is taking me off Prolia to start Evenity as I am continuing to have compression fractures. I have been on Prolia for 18 months. Does anyone have experience with this crossover?

1 Reactionthat's a new word for me - spicule - had to google it the problem is we feel good usually when we have the first awful dexa then we have to deal with all the things we're told to take that will make us feel bad

1 Reactionand then the doctors tell us the bad feeling is unrelated to the drug, and who knows if we would ever fracture anyway.
I knew at fifty that I would have osteoporosis, and I waited 23 years for the awful dexa. Then I took the drug that came out 23 years ago, and it doesn't make me feel bad, but it is making my dexa look good. I wasn't smart; I was lucky. After I was on the medication for almost two years the black box and the restriction for two years use lifted. The endocrinologist I've seen for all these 25 years told me I could stay on Forteo until my T-score is -1. If I ever get to -1, I'll be angling and scheming for another year.
Forteo doesn't work for everyone and some people can't tolerate the side effects. We need good drugs for everyone.

1 ReactionI'm on Evenity myself, and the reason is that one of my vertebrae is degenerated to such a degree that it resembles an actual fracture. I'm not a medical person, but my impression is that anytime an osteoporotic needs bone regeneration meds, and there's already been at least one fracture, then Evenity is the drug of choice among specialists.
I guess that means Evenity's known to rebuild and/or strengthen bone that much more aggressively, or more thoroughly, than other anti-osteoporosis meds.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

3 ReactionsMy understanding is that Evenity builds bone for 3-months & then maintains the gains for the remaining 9-months. That's what I've gleaned so far from articles that I've read.

1 ReactionI was on Prolia for two years prior to starting Evenity. I had wonderful gains on Prolia. I went from a -4.1 to a -3.6! However, most of my gains happened the 1st year. My doctor put me on Evenity for a year. I continued to gain to a -3.3. I am back on Prolia. My endocrinologist told me that in the future, I may be back on Evenity for another year. I have not had a bone scan since restarting Prolia.

1 ReactionInteresting...I'll ask my endo about that. He said something to the effect of keeping me on Evenity for 12 months, to build bone, followed by a period in which I'm using two additional bone-regeneration drugs (forgot the names). The latter, if I understand correctly, is to lock in the gains achieved during the 12 months of Evenity therapy.
I don't yet know the nuances of exactly how these drugs work. Still learning.

1 ReactionThis is another interesting reply. I didn't realize that Evenity could be used more than once in a person's lifetime, for just 12 months.
Did your endo say how many years you'll be on various anti-osteoporosis drugs?
Presently Evenity cannot be used more than a year and insurance cover it.
My doctor thought that will change in the future. She also stated that
there will be more break throughs in the future on osteoporosis medication.
Osteoporosis is a big drain on Medicare. There is a lot of research on how
to increase bone density. I am 71 and will be on bone building drugs for
the rest of my life with maybe a drug holiday or two interspersed in there.
