I have experienced chronic heartburn for years. Then, at age 66, I was diagnosed with intestinal/colon cancer. I was put on Omeprazole as part of my cancer treatment. That was 14 years ago. I was lucky enough to survive this long without a cancer reoccurance. However, I currently experience occasional nausea and I blame omeprazole. I would like to get off omeprazole because of these annoying bouts of nausea and throwing up. When I don't take omeprazole I experience one day of renewed energy until the stomach acids kick in. I'm wondering if anybody has successfully found an alternative medication to omeprazole that works for them?
@artgirl7: I took Omeprazole 10mg for about 10+ yrs. Stopped abruptly and replaced with an over the counter Famotidine 20mg in am! I have been on this regimen for several yrs and only had one gastro-reflux episode after a spicy late night dinner ( I know better!!!). Check with your doc, but this has resolved my reflux problem and also the risks of long-term Omeprazole usage. Hope this is helpful. Best health to you! Bette
Agree that Pepcid - famotidine - is the best alternative. I was on Nexium or Prilosec for a very long time and it became a trigger for the microscopic colitis i now have. It took 2 a day for a short while when I first switched but I have been one a day for 3 years.
Supplement with tums when necessary - but that happens rarely.
Does anyone who has IBD - ulcerative colitis, know how famotidine will affect it? I have reflux, sometimes very bad, and just suffer because I choose that over uncontrollable diarrhea. But I know the long term problems with reflux and need some relief.

@jlmp - this - how famotidine would affect those with UC - would be an excellent discussion to start in the IBD support group on Mayo Clinic Connect, if you're so inclined. You'd go to the home page for that group https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/inflammatory-bowel-disease-ibd/ and go down below the blue box on the top to where it says "Start a new discussion +" just a little ways down on the left side.

Sounds like a good plan.
