Oral Lichen Planus: What meds & treatments have worked for you?
Greetings from Virginia! I was recently diagnosed with oral lichen planus. I'm an RN but had never heard of this condition before. I've seen my dentist, a dermatologist and a periodontist and still don't feel I have a viable treatment plan.
This is what I've been prescribed so far: Clobetasol Propionate ointment, 0.05% by my dentist (my dermatologist told me this was way "too strong."
Dental paste, by my dermatologist, which is the most miserable stuff to apply EVER. I've tried all the tricks, but it always gets on my tongue and cheeks when I try to apply it only to my gums. It's GROSS.
Dexamethasone mouthwash by my periodontist, just recently. This is definitely the easiest product to use -- but I can't really tell if it's helping yet. It does contain 5% alcohol, which surprises me since alcohol is supposed to be avoided.
I would truly like to find some non-traditional meds or supplements and will try increasing vitamin D and will add B12 (I already take a B complex nightly). Has anyone had success with anything else? Apple cider vinegar, other supplements?

Hello @hem1959, I would like to invite @suecutuli, @pacific2 and @ginala to this discussion to share their experiences with what they used to help with their oral lichen planus diagnosis and how they manage symptoms when they flare up.
@hem1959 - you mentioned that your dermatologist said you were prescribed meds that were too strong, have you been able to get everyone on the same page as to which treatment is best for you?
Good afternoon! I could have written the first two paragraphs verbatim and actually looked to see if I had.
I went to see a periodontist after my dentist dx me. She recommended I dab Clobetasol Propionate ointment, 0.05%, on my gum line with a cotton swab for two weeks. It did help relieve some of the inflammation but only slightly. The dermatologist agreed with this tx. I also use red light therapy and Closys mouthwash. It is much more gentle and doesn’t burn. The dermatologist agreed also prescribed lidocaine gel for when the pain needs stronger treatment. I also use several things for dry mouth. None of this has fixed the problem but has calmed it down 25%-50%. Yesterday I saw my dentist for an unrelated issue. She strongly suggested I go see a functional medicine provider. She wonders if I have metal allergies from my caps. I do have nickel allergy. I will follow up with the providers she recommended. I don’t feel like I’ve made much progress over the past year. The pockets around my teeth are getting very deep. Not sure what else to do, just like you.
Good Day,
My daughter has OLP and has been given IVIG treatments over a course of two years. She has definitely seen improvement and remission. We will have to see if that is long term at the end of the treatment.
On another note, one of my dental hygienists recommended clove oil to help relieve pain and prevent infection after a dental procedure. It seemed to work for my situation. You mentioned alternate options so I thought it might be worth mentioning.
Hoping you find some relief.
I have had it for decades. I do understand when you talk about the medication’s and the dosage level
I have a Durm doctor tell me to use Tom children Strawberry, flavored fluoride, free, die free, And so on. I’ve been using it for a couple of years now. At first, I didn’t think it was helping, but I am now in 2+ years and my oral licken planus Is better. The pain is so much better
I also noticed I have to be careful for what I eat. Some foods make it worse and the pain level is great.
Try to find a toothpaste that don’t affect the Licken And watch what you eat it will help you
I wish you the very best in your journey. It’s not a fun one.
I’ll try anything!
What are IVIG treatments? Also, doesn’t the clove burn?
I still have a bump on the inside of lower lip from the biopsey to chk forOLP.
Per my Derm. I’ve tried all kinds of ointment that burn k
Like He’ll! Even injections that dang near killed me with pain! The only thing that gives me temporary Lidocaine? I carry it in my purse.
Too strong RX? Maybe what I took was too strong as it burned so bad. Would like to join your discussion group. Thanks
Feel your pain! I m getting ready for full mouth implants and they said it that will probably help the OLP. I have lost most of my teeth from breast cancer radiation.
I hope all is well with your cancer dx and turning toward the positive for you even if you have to send a bundle on dental implants. That’s cannot be cheap!
