My Experience with Evenity
I just finished my 12th set of Evenity injections today. I wanted to share my experience with other people who are considering starting Evenity or are already receiving the injections.
Cost and Ordering
My Medicare Advantage Plan covered most of the cost of the medication, and it was authorized very quickly. My out of pocket cost for all the medication was about $2800. My copayments varied depending on which coverage stage I was in. I used my insurance company’s online pharmacy, and the syringes were shipped to my doctor’s office. I never had to pay for the administration of the medication, which was always done by a medical assistant. I saw my doctor several times during the 12 months. The last visit was to go over what happens next.
Side Effects
I experienced some of the side effects listed on Amgen’s website, although not all at the same time. I reported the side effects to my doctor and to Amgen. The side effects included injection site pain, bone pain, joint pain, muscle pain, eczema-like rashes, and fever. I never considered stopping the treatment due to the side effects. The majority of the side effects that I experienced didn’t last very long after each set of injections- sometimes just a day or two. The eczema-like rashes lasted a couple of months.
After Evenity
The next steps are a bone density scan and Prolia injections which are once every 6 months. I’m not sure how long I will be on Prolia.

If you have another reclast infusion please check out what Windyshores had to say about how she and her doc worked out a plan for her that helped her with managing potential side effects. What have you and your doc discussed about what comes next? Will you take a different drug like tymlos or evenity or?
Hello. I am wondering if your supplement paid all of the balance that Medicare didn’t cover. Did you have out of pocket expenses?
Thank you.
I have not had any out of pocket expenses, and I have not yet seen how much each insurance covered. Someone noted earlier, that maybe the difference in some people being charged is that some are receiving the injections at an infusion site or Dr office, and some are injecting at home. I am getting mine by the nurse at the Dr office.
Hello everyone, I had 1 reclast and then had a stress fracture in my femur. I was switched to Evenity. I am on 7 and asked for a dexa scan. Great news to report! My t score in my spine went up a whole point! I will start Prolia after my 12th. I was very nervous but only feel minimal side effects, injection site pain, headaches, and sometimes flu like a couple days after. I have bad osteoarthritis so not sure if my joint pain is that or a side effect.
I'm confused by your doctor/assistant's lack of concern. The warnings on Evenity state that Atypical Femoral Fracture is a risk. Groin & thigh pain are symptoms. Did the pain go away or did they xray your femur?
I think that as well. I’m thinking that most medicines these days are not as great as we thought. This whole osteoporosis disease is so catch 22 for me. I dammed if I do and dammed if I don’t. Right now the only side effects from tylemos is after the shot - get dull headache and some nausea- but I take it at night and lay down. I fall asleep fairly fast so my morning I don’t have any issues. BTW - the shots are not as troublesome as I think - they take about 3 minutes to prep-shot-done. This is. The last drug I can take to build bone. Right now I hope I don’t get long-term symptoms.
Thank you for your concern. The pain in my thighs and lower legs has subsided. No X-ray. Part of the problem is that I have arthritis in my knees (esp. the rt one), and tendinosis in the hip, so I do get pain throughout my body. The day I wrote the previous post I was terribly frustrated and in a lot of pain. I did more reading and found that arthritis can be aggravated by Evenity. So I'm still in pain, esp. at night. I got my eighth month shots a week ago. When I wake up in pain, I tell myself, I'm done with the Evenity. We'll see. I am starting an arthritis aquatics class (twice a week) tomorrow. Fingers crossed it will help some. I agree with you that there should have been more concern when I informed the office about the pain in my legs. Luckily for me (and them) it wasn't a femur crack.
I'm also reluctantly on the Evenity journey. I'm not impressed with any of the bone drugs. I've spent hours researching other forums as well as medical publications for more natural options following this year of injections.
Strontium Citrate (OTC) consistently stands out. Many who are unable or unwilling to take the drugs have reported amazing success with SC. I would be willing to test it out for 6-mo or so and then pay for a REMS scan to see if the bone density has held. But it would be so much easier if I had the "blessing" of my doctor rather than being dismissed so quickly because it wasn't a drug.
When you say you are not impressed with the bone drugs can you be a bit more specific. There is at least one thread under the section Osteoporosis that addresses strontium. Hope that will be helpful in your decision making.
I also have just finished 12 months of Evenity shots and am now taking a break to have some dental work (implants) done.
(1) Should I wait until the implant bone graft heals (approx. 4 months) before starting my next osteoporosis treatments?
(2) Is it better to go with Prolia or Reclast?
(3) I also need to have fusions of my neck vertebrae and of my lower spine vertebrae, I am holding off on this as long as possible, but I am 74 years old, and the pain will not let me wait forever. Any recommendations?
After finishing my Evenity treatments, I had a decrease in lumbar spine BMD from -2.0 to -2.1, and an increase in the right hip BMD from -2.0 to -1.9.
