Genicular Artery Embolization for Knee Pain
I had a TKR three year ago and still have new pain.
I was offered a GAE ( Genicular Artery Embolization)
Does anyone know anything about this

If GAE is done and no pain is felt, what is the outcome as the arthritis continues to deteriorate the knee? will TKR be recommended later?

1 ReactionMy bruise was right near the catheter insertion point. It was maybe 3 or 4 inches on my inner thigh. I used arnica cream and it helped. Sadly, GAE did not help my knee but it had already been replaced.
did you do GAE to avoid TKR or to delay TKR? I am considering it for 2nd knee (1st had TKR) but wonder if can totally avoid TKR as the arthritis is not stopped by GAE.
that's my concern also! I'd like to know! if GAE can be repeated once successful, maybe I'll age out of a TKR. LOL
when I consulted with Dr. Padia's associate, I was told they wanted to prove it works and get insurance companies to pay for it. I was on the wait list, meaning at the end of a year I would get the procedure. I was in too much, too often regular pain and had another consult with another radiologist who told me, go see a surgeon. so now I'm 5 months post a tkr. I hope more is known and understood about GAE so I can use it on other knee rather then TKR when the time comes.
My understanding is GAE can be repeated.
Honestly, I did it to avoid TKR. My physical therapist told me about the GAE study, and I qualified. My other understanding is if one gets GAE, then they're still able to get TKR...but if one has had a TKR they wouldn't be eligible for GAE. Of course, I may have misunderstood. I know a few people, directly and indirectly, that indicated the TKR wasn't worth it. Anyway, for me, so far, so good.
good luck and continued success~ ! I have read about people having GAE after TKR for pain. Did you participate in the study with Dr. Padia at UCLA? my friend had it done about 3 weeks ago. Her goal is to avoid TKR.

1 ReactionYes! I’m in the study. Participants of the study will be followed for…I think two years. Something like that. Dr. Padia and all the members of his team have been just great.
