Is anyone else dealing with a neurogenic cough?
I have been a patient at Mayo for about two years. After meeting with a pulmonologist , allergist, gastroenterologist, and ENT specialists; and trying a variety of treatments, I am still coughing. I have had three laryngeal blocks. It helps somewhat, but I’m still coughing. The diagnosis is “neurogenic” cough. It’s not a simple cough. It’s a body wracking, continuous, harsh cough that can take away my ability to speak or have any volume to my voice. It severely limits my ability to socialize; the cough is irritating to other people and makes others very uncomfortable. They can even get angry listening to it, although I usually don’t have any control over it. Ricola cough drops with honey and herbs help. I I know this is a rare problem, but I would love to know if there are others out there and how they are faring.

I was prescribed pregabalin and it works.
I can try to arrange this again if I get enough responses to my email directly with your email addresses. Then I can invite you to a zoom.
Thanks for posting the link. I've read Dr Koufman's book, The Chronic Cough Enigma. I also follow Dr. Robert Bastian of the Bastian Voice Institute. Thank goodness there are a few experts in the field of neurogenic cough!
When I prop myself I end up sliding down so it defeats the purpose but I keep doing it every night. Changing positions definitely brings on a of coughing jag. I don’t get why.
Hi my husband has Para-sinus cancer, which spread to frontal lobe & now in liver. A bout a month after he had Radiotherapy to head/sinuses & neck he developed a nasty dry cough, which keeps him awake. The Radiotherapy causes dry mouth & throat. Makes speech difficult due to dryness of throat. Makes it hoarse & difficult to say things. The cough even though he’s had antibiotics & now the Doctor he saw a couple of days ago said it was a virus. He is having Chemo. The cough I think started before that. Now reading what you have said. I wonder if it could be Neurogenic. His type of cancer is a large cell Neuroendracrine cancer. I was wondering whether it was to do with this. The thing I fear worst is that this dreadful cancer spreading to lungs. I wish there was some further treatments & research or trials for this cancer type. We have not been given any positive help by the Oncologist of medics. All doom & gloom. Any advice on cough or treatment or alternatives that work on this type of cancer, I will be grateful. Im
I was diagnosed today by an ENT throat specialist after 3 years of off and on chronic coughing.
Dr. said my bad seasonal allergies and mild acid reflux has contributed to causing irritation to my larynx and surrounding nerves.
I’m starting on 10 mg of Amitriptyline, to ramp up by 10 mg weekly until/if coughing gets better. Also a session with a Speech Therapist.
I’ve read all the comments here, found them helpful and will post again as I start this journey.
I’m so tired of this ongoing coughing.

Yes, I am doing great as far as the cough is concerned. The twice daily use of the nebulizer and inhaler have given me my life back!!!
