Phlegm in my throat and post nasal drip after Covid
Ever since I had covid in January of 2022 I recovered from the virus but I was left with a constant phlegm in the back of my throat and post nasal drip that will not go away. The feeling of having mucus in the back of my throat actually gets worse when I try to get rid of it by coughing. I have been given steroid inhalers, albuterol, allergy medication, but none of these work. The mucus gets worse especially after I eat. I've never felt like this before and it all started after covid. Can anybody relate to what I am going through?

Do you have hoarseness also? Have you had a test from your ENT looking at your voice box?
I’m sorry you’re experiencing these real symptoms from COVID. I’ve been taking THORNE NAC (N-Acetylcysteine) 500mg once a day, and sometimes twice daily if my symptoms flare up. It seems to help slow things down for me. Of course it’s not a prescription so many don’t prescribe it.
Im so sorry for what didn’t occur with your providers that should have!
It is frightening what’s going on in medicine today! In some cases there is a lack of thoroughness in others it speaks of incompetence, which is totally dangerous for we patients. I too have had providers miss a kidney lesion on MRI, totally missed it, although another later scan from a different provider found it and led to diagnosis with a renal papillary carcinoma confirmed by biopsy, So the radiologist completely missed it! I could even see it on the scan results!
It’s frightening because there are so many people whose information is falling through the cracks and then they are worse off before their condition gets attended to! All the best to you, keep up hope and just keep pursuing the course that you need because it’s no one else is going do it as well as you! Keep going! ❤️
Would you kindly share the results of your ENT visit?
It’s funny I just woke up with a hoarse throat when I seen your reply.
Usually yes in the mornings, I find myself with sore and hoarse throat. Always have water and humidifier next to me but never works.
I haven’t got an ENT to look at my voice box, no. I haven’t even considered.
Also I am new to this website so apologies if there’s any mistakes in my reply.. ❤️🩹
Yes hoarseness with feeling of something in my throat began over 3 yrs ago. Neither the 1st ENT and 2 gastrologist could give me an answer. But 6 mo ago the hoarseness was constant the 2nd ent took test/bioposy have dysplasia pre cancer on the voice cords. Need radiation treatment. I am so upset with what the complications can be. Please take care of yourself. If you are experiencing something different with your voice make an appt. Good luck.
I have also suffered with post nasal drip and sinus drainage which makes me cough a lot. I went to an ENT and was diagnosed with vasomotor rhinitis. Prescription given for ipratropium which helps just a little bit at this point, I take what I can get. It’s just another one of my symptoms
Long Covid since Nov 2020. After 4 1/2 years of phlegm in throat, I had an unrelated infection, was given a steroid shot and a prescription for arythromycin(sp) and the unrelated infection and phlegm is gone! The phlegm has remained gone for a couple of months. I’m waiting for it to come back but so far so good. Thanks to Dr. Jordan Vaughn of Birmingham’s treatment, and the grace of God, I’m on my way to 100% back to my old self.
I have had COVID 6 x’s, I live in Florida, which we all know is a COVID precautionary denier state. My recent bout was in June 2025/and after this recovery ( I was prescribed Plaxovid) I too have this exact symptom, but for me, it’s more pronounced after waking in the morning. I feel as if there is a film within my chest I cannot get rid of.
After 4-1/2 years of Long Covid, I’ve been seeing Dr. Jordan Vaughn since June and had significant improvement in certain symptoms, including phlegm in my throat and a constant runny nose. He diagnosed me with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) and prescribed Pioglitazone 15 mg, which really helps. No more phlegm, and the runny nose is much better. Before seeing Dr. Vaughn, I’d seen a well-respected ENT. He treated me for a year for chronic sinus infection, hoping that clearing up the infection would get rid of the runny nose. It didn’t. Finally, he performed a nasal ablation, which helped for a few months, but then right back to the constant runny nose. Dr. Vaughn has also helped me with fatigue, body aches, and headaches. We’re still working on brain fog and anxiety, but I’m thrilled with my progress so far.
