What treatment helps for feet neuropathy?

Posted by corneliagd @corneliagd, Aug 27 5:20pm

Hello,
I am looking for years for some medical treatment to ease my neuropathic pain in my feet. It is getting worse especially at night: pain and burning of my soles, numbness and tingling.
What I am taking now, with modest results, are Naproxen and Magnesium Glycinate.
What about you? What is your medication for flair ups?

My experience with nighttime foot polyneuropathy self care treatment effectiveness:
ALA - Maybe
Benfothiamine 250mg 2X/day - Definitely
Combination of Voltaren gel and Aspercreme (4% lidocaine) topically - A lot
Tylenol - a little
Homeopathics (cell salts)- Maybe
Changing sleeping position in bed frequently - reduces occurrence
Finding just the right amount of daytime exercise. (too much or none seems to increase flares)
Electrical foot stimulation - No help, maybe makes things worse.

I'm 58 years old and I have been living with a pinched nerve for quite some time and now am feeling numbness in my feet, looking for something that can help especially at night

Treatment depends on what your symptoms are. For me , I only have foot numbness in both feet and occasional shooting pains. I take multi-vitamins, vitamin b-12 since it is good for nerves and I walk 2 miles a day. I always wear shoes since my feet are numb. The shoes feel better than walking barefoot and protect from injury. Good luck!

I take Alpha lipoid Acid 600mg started with 300mg. morning and evening. get it at Amazon. Don't cost a lot and it helps. don't stop taking it. give it a change to work.
God Bless All

Welcome @jr1991, Actually there are quite a few discussions by members who have mentioned red light therapy. Here's a list of the discussions if you want to scan through them - https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/discussions/?search=red%20light%20therapy%20neuropathy.

Have you tried any other treatments for your neuropathy?

Tyrone,
I've tried most every cream on the market. They do work, but for such a short time! I know what you mean about the leg weakness. It's been only a few months now that I've noticed that, and I hate it. Sometimes even to do grocery shopping, I have to stop and give my legs a rest just to be able to continue my shopping. I have been doing the exercises that my pt gave me for leg strengthening, and they do help, but its a slow process and some days, just discouraging to have this happening. One day at a time, I keep reminding myself.

gen55 thank you so much for responding to my whining. Would you mind sharing the exercise-I will be starting PT next week!

Thanks again--Lidocaine 5% helps sometimes!

I have several exercises that he gave me. I do a set of stair exercises, sit and stand exercises, quite a few more that he added as I got stronger on my feet. And I also find that walking is helping as well. Anxious to see what your pt gives you for exercises. Keep me posted!

Does the Voltaren help much? My doctor told me to try it.

It seems to help along with the lidocaine lotion. At least temporarily. Amazon and Walmart has a generic form (same as the brand name) so it couldn't hurt to give it a try. I've made the comment before, I have a collection of creams, lotions and supplements that have been mentioned on this forum. Many were a waste of money, but I was willing to give them a try. Everyone seems to have different results. I'm just trying to avoid the prescription meds.
