STOP! Don't do this if you have osteoporosis

I am starting this thread hoping people will post things they've done that they have regretted, for one reason or another, when suffering from osteoporosis.

I'm going to start the conversation with a list of things we've learned already, and we are newbies!

1. Lift objects heavier than recommended by your physician (for my husband, that means nothing heavier than 5 pounds right now, with 3 fractures).

2. Don't bend at the waist! He got a fracture bending to empty the dishwasher.

3. Be cautious when driving - avoid rough roads, bumps, and go very slow over speed bumps.

4. We had planned to go on a boating tour (on a commercial fishing boat) on the ocean. After seeing a boat rocking and bouncing over choppy water we decided not to go.

5. Do not slouch when sitting in a chair or couch. If you're going to rest for any period of time on a couch elevate your legs (per our physical therapist).

6. Do not try any exercises until you have cleared it with your doctor, especially before your doctor confirms your fracture is stable.)

Please add to the discussion. I think this could be useful to people, especially people new to this.

Can you share with us how you reversed your osteoporosis? What kind of supplements did you take? What kind of exercises?What were your tscores before and what are they now? Thank you

I took and still take Garden of Life Raw Calcium, along with MK7, and Vitamin D. I added Calcium to make up my recommended dosage by my doc. I also do BHRT pellets. I go to gym and I do upper body (chest, back, shoulders, and arms, including the biceps and triceps), lower body (legs, glutes, and hips), free weights and machines, whatever I can that I feel will help. I don't remember what my scores were and I would have to dig those up. But my doc said "whatever you're doing keep it up".....My osteoporosis went into osteopenia and showed very little osteoporosis.

I'm due to have one in October, and I pray it hasn't gotten bad. I have had to lay off of the gym for a few months now due to back issues. So, we shall see what results I will have. I will flag your comment and try to get back with you on it.

thankyou, yes i'm ordering Great Bones immediately! my Orthopedic just prescribed Prolia without explaining anything. I questioned him the rebound effect which he dismissed..I wish they would take some time explain things more to a patient who is concerned. they are used to being listened to blindly and are intolerant of questioning clients. I feel so embarrassed asking them questions as they sort of roll up their eyes about people like us who try to find out more thru the net.

Never be embarrassed by your questions, one day they will be asking them too either for themselves or their loved ones. It’s big decisions to be made and they really do affect the rest of your life! Keep strong!😍

Yes. I agree. We have to continue asking questions that are important to us and find someone else if we dont get what we need. Let your dic know that you haven't gotten what you need.

I have osteoporosis - I exercise, do yoga and eat and drink plenty of
Calcium rich foods - dairy, etc. No meds !

Do you mind sharing more about your decision making regarding meds. There are many here who are struggling with how they will approach this decision after the diagnosis. Can you also share your dexa scores? Are your scores holding steady?

This is a personal decision- I am not advising any one just my decision.
I took fasomax yrs ago for 1 yr and stopped.
I’ve spoken w my rheumatologist last year - she said if I wasn’t going to take meds then no sense in getting dexa - I agreed- I also believe the dexa scores aren’t an accurate picture of what’s going on. She said just keep doing what you’re doing re exercise and diet !
I’m not a big medicine taker since I believe the side effects are very harmful.
I’m an avid follower of Dr Andrew Weil.
I’m 88 yrs old .
My best to all in making your own decision.

I think someone who is 88 may have a different mindset re: medication. I'd probably do the same.

It would of been helpful to know what your T score were.
