Retinal "ink blots" when awaking in a dimly lit room

I worked up a couple of images to sort of convey how the size of the ink blots increase and decrease. I'm curious about what the mechanism is that can account for this. The other eye has a different ink blot pattern but also changes similarly.

I thought. I’d post this update/. Back n March, I started taking a 120 MG magnesium tablet before bedtime. While on vacation earlier this month, I did not take the magnesium for 10 nights. My normal inkblot pattern was overlaid by a larger darker, single blob that overlaid the more of a splatter pattern that was there previously. After returning home, I resumed the magnesium at that time and over the course of about a week. The blob disappeared, revealing the normal inkblot pattern. Once there is enough light for me to perceive colors, the inkblots/blobs largely disappear.
